I don’t know if it’s possible but I think my bunny is going through serious depression.  We had three bunnies but over the last 2 years, lost 2 (toki and elmo).  So for the first time in 6 years, Pumpkin is by herself.

She’s eating fine and pooping fine. But doesn’t play with her toys at all. She normally terrorizes any willow toys and even plays fetch.  But no reaction to any toys at all.  For whaever reason, she keeps getting poop stuck to her butt and it becomes matted on her. I’ve given her a butt bath twice within the week.

Other than losing her friends, nothing environmental has changed. She gets timothy hay (along with other varieties as treats) and Oxbox pelletes followed by veggies salad dinner.  She was always a very outgoing bunny. Very interactive with humans and even makes noises (talking) at me.  She’s keeping to herself and totally different.

I have experienced when animals follow the dead friend.  I’m afraid to lose her too.  We thought about getting another bunny her Pumpkin but our lives have changed recently and cannot add another animal.  What can I do to cheer her up?

Rabbits absolutely suffer from losses of friends. She is most likely going through a sort of grieving time. The best thing you could do is make sure you spend a lot of time with her, even if it’s just sitting in the room with her or even just talking to her. She may not want a lot of up close attention at first. Just be very patient. I would also probably take her to the vet (a rabbit savvy one), see if it’s not something else and see if the vet has any suggestions. The poopy butt is what concerns me a little. Hang in there!!

Once you mentioned the poopy butt it took it out of the realm of just emotional. I think she should see the vet for a check up. Describe her bahavior, the instances of poopy butt (if you get an appointment later in the week for example, write down when she gets it and what she’s eaten that day and the day before.)

She is going to be depressed over the losses, but you want to be sure she doesn’t have something physical going on as well. Loss of interest in toys can be sadness, but also as they get older they can play less or become bored with the same toys. Rule out the physical with the vet first, then see how she behaves.

And give her lots of cuddles and attention regardless. It will help both of you with the losses.
