i know that they both sound different but i mean HOW different? my rabbit flopped and he was around… eh… 2 and a 1/2 – 3 feet away from me? and i heard some light  teeth grinding. i cant tell if he was “purring'” or grinding his teeth… he had his eyes half closed but after about…5 mins of resting he got up and started to eat his pellets again (he usually doesnt eat all of them in one sitting). how can i tell the difference is there a video on youtube about this? thanks

Teeth grinding (in pain) is loud and alarming with my bun & she is usually hunched and does not move, eat or accept treats, where as purring is much much softer.

Like Naz said, look at the rabbit in context. If he is calm, flopped out, laying comfortably, I would think it’s purring. If he is hunched, stiff, scared or agitated looking, and the sound is loud, then I would think that is grinding.

Think about if you hurt your finger or stub your toe; if you’re like me, you’re going to audibly say, “Ow ow ow ow, oh man, that HURT!!!” Think of grinding as a bunny saying “ow ow ow”.

I don’t have the best hearing, so I’ve never HEARD purring. I can feel my buns gently grind their teeth when I massage their jaws and cheeks.

I agree with Beka – it’s pretty obvious when they’re in pain and they sit hunched up and not eating.

I can’t hear purring either, but I can see them moving their jaw or feel it if I’m petting them. Mine will often purr while they’re just laying by themselves in the living room.
