Went to the vet with Bindi for a re-check on Friday. He’s been battling an ear infection in his left ear for over a month now. It’s almost gone but still a bit of bacteria left. Another 14 days of topical meds and then back to the vet. I’m getting so frustrated. Not only are the infections becoming much more frequent but they are getting harder to cure. It actually seems like his ear canals in both ears has gotten smaller which is making cleaning and administering drops much more difficult and I fear it will only make things worse. I’m very worried that the only option is going to have to be surgery to open the base of his ears if this keeps up. REALLY don’t want to go that route. I don’t think my vet has ever done it before and I saw pics online and it’s just heartbreaking.

Please give him some more ear vibes.

Is this the only vet you use? I know you’ve had an ongoing relationship, but maybe a different vet will be better with ears. Sometimes a fresh point of view helps.

I hope that Bindi’s ear infection completely clears up soon and that he stays infection free for a long time.

RabbitPam- This is the only rabbit-savy vet in my City. Well there’s actually none in my City, we go to the town across the river. There are some who say they do exotics but when you bring your bunny in with stasis issues they say give her pineapple juice and mineral oil, then charge you an arm and a leg. This really happened with my bunny, Velvet, this was before I knew a lot about health issues and what to do. Velvet ended up dying the next day. After that, I kept searching for a rabbit vet and finally found this one. I trust her opinion 100%. She has her own rabbits. His ears are just very infection prone. I guess it would be nice to get a second opinion but that’s not an option. She says it’s rare to have a bunny with so many ear infections.

                          Thanks, guys.

Now, I’m even more worried. Last night, while I was petting him I noticed a round lump at the base of the infected ear. I’m scared it’s an abscess! I’m e-mailing my vet this morning to see if she thinks I should bring him in before the planned 14 days.

Keep the vibes coming! We need them!

I’m sorry you had that experience and I know what it’s like to finally find a vet you have confidence in. Just an idea.
Our poor Bindi needs some of MM’s super strength healing vibes asap.

One thought: if a lump has surfaced, it may make the basic underlying cause treatable, so it could be a good thing. Sometimes a problem needs to get a bit worse so it can be managed (like excised when it’s big enough to get at) medically if it’s no longer on a cellular level. So maybe there will be a more radical treatment for this lump, but then it will totally cure the ear infection side effect.

I’ve noticed the last few weeks Bindi seems really thin. He seems like just bones when I pet him. I weighed him last night: 4, 14 oz. He’s down from last weigh in, although this was his weight in November. I’m thinking it could be from the oral meds he was on for a few weeks a couple of months ago. He’s going back to the vet probably later this week.

His normal weight is a couple of ounces over 5lbs. I want my boy healthy again!!

Should I increase his pellets a bit to try to fatten him up?

I’d wait until the vet sees him this week and ask if she thinks you should. Then get her recommendation of what to fatten him with, knowing how things effect him.

Friday was quite eventful. We had a vet appointment at 2:00 for a re-check. Bindi was fine at breakfast but then later in the morning he started showing signs of tummy upset, not eating and clearly uncomfortable. When we got the vet she gave him a bit of fluids and a motility shot and he was fine within a couple of hours. I was so glad! Friday I felt awful as I had my wisdom teeth out Thursday and I was super swollen and sore.

The good news is his ears are finally clear. I wonder how long we can go before they get infected again. Trying to remain positive but those ears are just so much trouble lately.

With regards to his weight, for now she said to just monitor and let her know if he doesn’t start gaining now that he’s done his meds. She checked his teeth and they are not at the point where they need to be done yet.
