I’ve been noticing now for a few days that my two bunnies look a little “poofy” and unkempt, despite no changes in their regular eating, grooming, drinking and elimination routines.  Tonight, I took a “Furminator” (deshedding tool) to Simon and noticed that he was indeed… shedding.  I approached Olive with said grooming tool after brushing off a small mountain’s worth of Simon’s fur and yup–twice the shedding fun for this bunny momma–Olive’s shedding too!  The grooming tool must feel good to them during a shed, as usually there’s protest when I brush them with a regular brush.

I imagine it varies, but about how long can I expect their shed to last?

No idea on the shed length, but what furmitater do you have? Kittens, Cat or Dog?

Usually a major shed lasts up to a month. Can be as often as 4x a year, though it seems like one or two big sheds a year and two smaller ones at other times. Also may vary slightly depending on the climate of where you live. (Spockie shed about 3x more in New England than Samantha does here in FL. I think it’s because we have no significant seasonal changes inside or out.)

Just be careful not to overdo with the Furminator. The main complaints I’ve read from members who use it is that they didn’t stop soon enough and it went too far. Probably fixed with shorter sessions more often.

I think it said “small animals”, honestly–so I’d guess around kitten size.  At first, I was regretting that I purchased it, because if the rabbit isn’t shedding–it doesn’t work (which is probably a good thing!)  I thought the thing was bogus and bought a small nylon bristle brush for cats.  Well, that didn’t work this time, so I switched over to the Furminator.  Yup.  Works.

When I had my Flip-flop (also a Holland lop) she always seemed like she was going through a massive shedding.  Her fur I picked off in clumps–but she was very sweet about it.

I can see how one can get overzealous with the Furminator, but I’ve been careful, and no patches of bald skin or anything like that.  In fact, I brush them twice a day now, and I’m amazed how much fur they can shed… and still have more fur!

In my experience shedding lasts either 2 weeks or a month. Good luck with all that fur
