Rabbit ate silicone rubber!

Hi everyone, I have recently adopted a 5lb mini-lop. Little did I know, he can bend himself to fit into places and access things he shouldn’t! He ate a 2 inch by quarter inch piece of silicone rubber (along the edge of an old iPhone case) and now I’m worried! I just gave him pellets and hay and put him in his cage to monitor. What signs should I look for? When should I expect to see it in his poop? Thank you!

Make sure he still poops and pees normally. if he stops go to vet asap. Also encourage him to eat lots of hay as that will be most beneficial to him passing the bad stuff. Also watch his mood. If he becomes sluggish or withdrawn, call your vet.

I agree, though I would just give him hay and no pellets. Possibly some very wet mild lettuce. Lots of water. You want him to pass it as soon as possible, so the more fluids or hay that move his gut the better. Other foods may not allow it to break down in his system easily, so if it has to pass, the hay is the best for breaking it down and the water for flushing it out.

Definitely watch for poos, pee and lethargy, sitting in meat loaf position and not running as usual, squinting or grinding teeth. If those happen he may be in pain and your vet will need to help him pass it.

Thanks so much! It has been 36 hours since he’s eaten it and he’s been pooping and peeing like normal. I gave him extra pellets and lots of hay afterwards, and thankfully it made him really thirsty so he drank a lot as well. Since it’s been so many hours, is he in the clear now? I haven’t seen the rubber bits in his poop though (the rubber is orange)…

I would still keep a close eye on him. Keep giving lots of hay.

Bunnies can be so sensitive but it’s amazing what they can eat and not get sick. I’ve been on BB for a few years and we hear about bunnies eating all sorts of crazy stuff.

I know. I am amazed at what they do eat, and what bothers them that you think is fine. (Sammy might have been off from an older alfalfa treat she found. Not exactly rubber.)

Sounds like he’s fine, but I agree that you should keep an eye on his poos, behavior and appetite. Be sure to throw out the rubber thing, or put it away in some closed place he cannot get into.

Thank you all so much for your advice! He’s been doing fine ever since. It’s been a week since the incident and I still haven’t seen it in his poop strangely but I guess it was covered. He’s doing his normal nightly binkies so fingers crosses he’s in the clear. And I threw that case out the moment it happened! I have also removed everything chewable within a four foot distance off the floor and giving him more chewing toys. It’s so crazy how much you can love a bunny! <3

Sounds like he’s just fine. It’s amazing how some members bunnies can eat carpet, rubber, gum, candy, chips etc, etc, by accident and have zero problems, and then another bunny has one tiny bite of new veggie the digestive system goes bonkers. So it’s always good to stay alert as you just never know, but it sounds like yours is just fine and back to normal.

My bunny just ate silicone too, it was my apple pencil sleeve like chunks of it. I’m so angry, but mostly worried now. Am I not feeding him enough or giving him enough toys, he just always bites stuff he’s not supposed to. I give plenty of pellets, Timothy and alfalfa hay, chew sticks, straw mat.
