         Can rabbits pass gas?

Huckleberry just hopped up to me and she smells like she was sprayed by a skunk!

She is eating a bathrooming just fine, but I will keep an eye on her. Is this a sign of GI Stasis, though?i

Is she spayed? Lady stinks like a skunk before she was spayed when she was marking everything >.<

Yes, she was spayed over a year ago.

Whoops just saw that in your profile. Are her anal glands clean?

Rabbits can STILL mark spray if they want to after altering and it does smell kind of skunky. But it shouldn’t be a smell that lingers long on the rabbit. Usually gas causes sore tummies, not a smelly rabbit. Though I believe there was one person who said their rabbit passed gas a lot and she could hear it, that just means bun needs a change of diet since gas can cause tummy problems. But the “skunk” smell is usually them releasing their scent to mark, or out of fear.

Olivia smelled skunky once when her anal glands needed a good cleaning.

Hmm, maybe that would explain why there is urine all over the wall in her room… I thought she had just been digging frantically at her litter box and kicking wet bits of litter up, but yesterday, I found it on her tunnel. Greeeeeaat… I feel really slow for not putting all that together hahaha. I didn’t even realize female buns had anal glands, I guess I still have lots to learn about being a bun mom. Well, I guess I’ll be cleaning anal glands tonight! Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

There’s a section that describes it in the green banner above under Bunny Info.

Also, yes, bunnies can pass gas that you can definitely smell and might hear. Especially older ones (like men)

(Older women do, too, but would rather not admit it.).

HAHAHA Pam, I’m sure she was embarrassed about it, she is a lady after all!
                        Thanks, everyone!

Yes rabbits can pass gas. That doesn’t mean they are in Stasis but usually gas is painful and it could result in them not eating, which could result in Stasis, etc. It’s kinda like a cycle, and it’s best to help her relieve her gas…. let her out to excercise, maybe some Simethicone. If she stops eatng/bathrooming, then you know it could be Stasis and she’d need to see a vet asap.

The scent glands down there usually do stink like a skunk. They’re surprisingly easy to clean in most cases. Get a Qtip wet with very warm water and gently rub the stink out of the scent gland. It might be a brownish color, and if it’s hard, be extra gentle cause it’s a sensitive area.
