I got my bun brand new toys, a hay ball, willow balls, willow swirly sticks, willow batons, wooden pacifiers with willow rings and bark rings, grass sticks, a wiffle ball with treats inside, a cottontail cottage, everything that a bunny could ever want!  And what does she do instead?  Dig at my carpet and try to eat it.  I have to keep her toys to things she can eat, because whatever she can get her chompers on, she ingests.  I would like to get her a phonebook to let her dig at, but she will eat it.  I say No!  But she just pauses, then goes back to what she was doing, which was digging.  She digs at corners, digs for the black protector under the couch (which she cant get under but claws for it), and digs on my couch.  I am at wits end here!

well, the paper in phone books is fine to ingest, as long as she doesn’t eat all of it. maybe give it to her for a bit, then take it away after she’s had some fun with it.

Sounds like she is a digger, and she finds that more fun than chewing

maybe add a water bottle. Bunjamin used to listen when I said no but now he does what yours does so I’ve stepped up to a water bottle (usually not on stream where it might hurt him or get him super wet). He usually foot flicks away or runs away of some sort.

oh and I feel ya. Buns have a very naughty side and I’ve been where you are right now as I’m sure everyone has. Maybe take some time to do something away from the bun for a couple hours and not think about it.

I will definitely try both means. It is super frustrating… She did not used to be like this. I got her spayed over a month ago and I was at my parents for winter break and the back chicken yard had a nice dirt pile for her to play in and she would just start going at it and digging up a storm!! Now, she just wont stop!! Its like she is thinking “Maybe, if I dig deep enough, I will eventually find grass roots in this carpet!”

Huckleberry thinks the couch is the tastiest thing ever and is trying to dig a tunnel under the couch. I picked up a very large piece of cardboard and folded it in thirds and stuck it under the couch… now, I have a shreds of cardboard all over my living room but at least it isn’t chunks of carpet.
The cardboard is around 3’x4′. I picked it up at a grocery store. They put it between pallets of bottled water cases that come off their delivery truck. If you want to find one, go to a store and ask what time they are unloading their trucks. Be sure to get one that was not between pallets of chemicals though, so bun doesn’t ingest any spilled chemicals. Then, put it in the bun’s way. They get angry and make it a mission to destroy it, which is fun to watch haha.

She is a busy rabbit and some rabbits really need a project. I had a spayed female rabbit who just loved to dig. I had to keep her contained or else my house would be destroyed. She was an uspayed adult when I acquired her.

It was just her thing and it kept her occupied.

                    Huckleberry’s idea sounds promising.

Giselle eventually stopped digging once she was older…..

I put her tunnel in the way of the couch so she has to work for whatever she wants from the couch, works sometimes, until she takes the edge of the tunnel and pushes it aside. I will have to give it a try.
Sarita – I am hoping its an age thing too. She is only 7 months old, just a baby.
I took her out on the grassy area of my university where I used to take her before winter break just to let her run and get rid of some energy, and we got back and I got a whole hour nap!! It was great! She stayed asleep the entire time, and now she is awake and chewing a toilet paper roll! Oh praise the lord for a harness/leash trainable rabbit! And no worries, no fertilizer, pesticides, anything is used on that lawn.

I read somewhere on a rabbit site about taking a plastic sandbox (like those turtle sandboxes) and filling it with turf and having that be the bunny dig spot. I though that was a great idea though I imagine you’d have a lot of flung dirt and grass to clean up after, lol

I find that anything cardboard or phone is good for these rabbits. Some cardboard seems more fun than others (my two will ignore certain boxes, but when I had curtain rods delivered recently they would destroy a whole curtain box in a day – something about the cardboard they used was just awesome I guess). Diggy rabbits like a project and if they don’t approve of your projects they’ll find one of their own (sometimes even when they approve of yours, they’ll still choose to dig carpet or couches, just because it’s fun).

Some good suggestions on this thread! Have you tried a diggy box? Maybe fill it with phone books or shredded newspaper and let her go at it.

I always thought about having a designated sandbox for her, but oh just imagine the chaos! hahaha
But I am going to have so much fun with this hahaha… is there anywhere I can get used phonebooks or something? I dont exactly get them at my apartment, and I thought my parents had them, but, they thew them out after our move.

Tipsy, my Stickers is the same way … instead of “No!” I make a really annoying, high pitched “EH!” and she stops, “no” just gets ignored. For digging I have yet to find a dig box project she likes, but she has this huge paper tunnel (paper off like an industrial sized roll just rolled up loosely) that she digs at and shreds. And she digs less if I put a pile of hay in the carpeted room for some reason. I also block off every CORNER cause that is the place she finds it just irresistable to dig in – one has a cardboard box in it, another a piece of wood, another a night stand, etc. You could always call up your phone company and request a phone book to get one. Keeping a digger entertained is tough and if I dare let her out of my sight on carpet she will happily dig away at it, no matter what toys she has. lol
