So lately during our pet sessions I’ve noticed Bunjamin doing something with his mouth. From my point of view it looks like his cheeks are going in and out really fast. There’s no sound so I don’t really know. Bunji’s not really a sound maker. I hope it means he likes it and he’s not tooth grinding but I don’t know how to tell. Anyone know what I’m talking about with the cheek thing?

It’s like a soft tooth grinding, that indicates they are happy, much like a purr

oh thank goodness! I was hoping it was a happy thing not a mad or pain thing since he always has the option of leaving me if he doesn’t want pets. haha thank you

If a rabbit is in pain while they are tooth grinding, their body positions would be different than when he is relaxed and being pet.      Hunched up, aggression, and/or hiding and loud constant grinding is more of a pain response.  It’s more of an obvious distress.

What you are describing sounds like he is just “purring” — and different bunnies have different styles of the purr. Some are a few gentle tooth grinds a few minutes apart while they are being pet, while others just continually gently tooth grind with a more sideways motion at times as they go into full bliss.

oh ok yay! purring. My bf andy loves cats but I’m allergic and said to me “but bunnies don’t purr”… so I get to prove him wrong! woo and I’m excited I can make my bun happy.
