My Rabbit Apricot was spayed in wednesday the 4th its been 5 days now. She opened up the top past oof her wound within a few hours so she was rushed back to the vets and he put some more skin glue on the top  part. On the friday saturday morning afterwards I woke up to find she had managed to get the collar off and has been licking or nibbling the wound. It looked a but red with what I though was blood but it wasnt gaping in any way. I phoned out of hourse vet and they said if it wasnt open just to put the collar back on. She has had the collar back on for a further 2 days (5 in total). She’s eating well, drinking lots and even running about the place. However she is a bit of a terror and I’m scared to take it off too soon icase she interrrupts the healing proccess. How will I know when it is healed enough to take it off? She is back at the vets on the 14th but I’d rather not wait that long.

I have never had this problem, so I cannot say for sure. Perhaps you could at least keep it off for part of the day when you can more directly supervise her activities. See what she does when she grooms the wound, ect. Within a couple days you might be able to determine whether she’s ready.

I agree, leave it off when you can supervise, grooming is ok you just don’t want her biting at the sutures.

I would only take it off if you’re watching her closely, like the others said. Also, try to limit her activity for at least a week, especially if she’s an active rabbit and she’s having a more difficult time healing. You need to keep her more contained so that the incision will heal and hold well.

I don’t have anything other to say then what everyone has said, but I wanted to say vibes to Apricot! I hope she heals quickly now.

Thanks for your relpies, I’ll try taking it off although it may be impossible to get back on. Any hints on what to look for at the incision site to know if its healing okay? There is a blackish line down the middle which im assuming is the glue as it was initially  very precise staight line. Since she licked at it it is slightly askew  but it doesnt seem to be opening at all.

So desperate for it all to be over and her just to be fine and dandy!

You really should call and talk to your vet about this also.

I can relate to your difficulties with the e-collar. My boy had to wear one for over a week after his neuter because he kept picking at it and making it bleed. After the first few days, we removed it with strict supervision for a while in the evenings to give him a break and let him groom his face. He was still very insistent on picking at it as soon as the collar was off so we had to keep stopping him. We took his collar off when it was healed up pretty well (about a week after) and he stopped obsessing about “his area” so much.

I tend to prefer keeping the collar on as long as the vet recommended, and only letting it off if she manages to get it off herself again. It sounds like only one or two more days. Especially if you can’t easily get it off and back on in the first place. But as Sarita said, call the vet for a definite recommendation. Slight discomfort now isn’t worth another surgery in a few days if something gets damaged. The 14th is only 3 more days from now.

Took it off for a while but she just went straight to the wounds so managed to get it back on surprisingly easily. Think I’ll just keep it on until she is back at the vet now. Thanks for all the help! x
