I came to get some advice about Frank Jr. (and I did!) so I figured that I should formally introduce.  I've been taking care of him since it became clear that his mom wasn't... around 2 or 3 days old.

Frank Jr. ~ 5 days old

He is going to be so attached to you he just oozes love. What a treat you have been given. Frank Jr will end up being a favorite here at Binky Bunny so keep the pix coming. and tell your Gramma she is quite lovely to, looking good for 90.

I wish they were rescues  >> Frank just jumped on the keyboard and added these >>

His mom was free from a breeder because she wasn't show quality.  My friend and I were actually at a goat sale but she ended up taking home this "free bunny" now known as Frank Sr.  I discouraged it because I really don't like "caged" animals. But she couldn't resist the cuteness *sigh*  Then she found another dutch bunny at a feed store and fell in love with him. **doube sigh**  And she put them in the same cage.  I don't think she has outrightly admiditted it to me because she knows I won't approve, but she wanted cute baby bunnies.   She was busy for a few days when the babies that needed bottling were brand new, so I started feeding them.  And here we are today.

I have told her that I cannot handle more bunnies (of course I LOVE f.j. but it has been a stressful 6 weeks!) and she needs to get them fixed.  She did call around for prices and the vets here chage $350+ for spay and $300 for neuter.  The vets around here are not especially bunny savvy either.  I'm considering looking out-of-town to see if I can find someone with more experience that can do it for cheaper.  If I can find someone who will fix them for under $100, I will gladly pay to have her bunnies fixed.

So there's the story.  I wish it wasn't about irresponsible breeding

Oh that is sad Especially since Frank jr is having to pay for it (although you are doing an amazing job! He seems really happy, the little mush <3)

You might look to give them to a rescue and maybe you can volunteer to foster them until they find new homes? While it would be unfortunate to load rescues up with more, they often get steeply discounted prices on alterations. Of course your friend wont get to keep any of the ones the rescue takes.

Are you keeping Frank jr?

I haven't technichally, oficially admitted to keeping Frank Jr., but I don't really see how I could ever, posslbly part with him!

I am going to call the shelters and see if they have any ideas about a way to get them fixed.  There are lots of options for cats and dogs (to get discounts for spay/neuter) but not for bunnies that I have found.

I found the same range of high prices in the town I live in, $450 to spay a female and the doctor was very old and shakey too.

I contacted the rabbit sanctuary in Dallas and they were kind enough to refer me to the vet that did all their s/n and it was only $125 including a weeks worth of pain meds. I did spend a day driving up there and reading in their waiting room until Pringles had recouperated enough to go home, but it was worth it to have a vet I fully trusted. (price wasn't bad either ;-)

You might ask around the rescues, they would know the best options for you.
