so i am adopting from this rescue, and there seems to be no rabbits that i seem to like up for adoption at the moment. (i called them today and said that there will be more rabbits in about a month or so, and the rabbit i was interested in is sort of a “special needs” so i would definitely not be the right bunny parent lol. as i’ve never had a rabbit before)

there is however, this one dutch rabbit that i’ve visited! the first time we visited him (at some pet store) he peed on my mom? but other than that he seems nice… not too shy or anything. the cage he was in had no top so all the children could pet him and stuff but recently he moved to a petco where the cages are “closed” and you’d have to ask an employee if you want to pet it. so thats good i guess… but i heard that if rabbits pee on you then that means that they dont like you? i mean i guess i would be willing to wait a month but i bought a big bale of hay today (2 string. not that big, but im sure that its more than enough for ONE house rabbit) and i dont want it to get.. totally old and stale? also anyone have any tips for storing hay? some people said that it needs air to breathe, and others say it needs to be in an air tight container. at the moment it is in our garage with a huge plastic bag over it. and i live in texas and it BARELY rains here. we had a drought earlier this year.. so i doubt its going to rain any time soon..

so shall i wait for another rabbit to come? or should i get this dutch rabbit now? cause i dont want to wait too long for another rabbit to come because what if the dutch gets adopted? and there are no good new rabbits?

but i also dont want to get the dutch now because what if a better rabbit comes by? -.-… so complicated… what should i do? /: thanks! i would really like a lop but eh… they arent very popular in the rescue near me

Rabbits don’t pee on you because they don’t like you. They either pee on your to mark you as their territory, or it’s a nervous fear reaction.

If you don’t feel attached to this bun, I would wait until you find your little furry soulmate

What do YOU want ? If you like him, get him. Peeing on someone doesn’t mean they don’t like them, it means they are scared or marking. Rabbits don’t like to be held. Stickers first time I got near her, hunkered down and peed on herself she was so scared of me! And Powder peed on me cause I was messing with his litter box area one day. lol

Storing hay should be done in a container so they can breath, in an area that doesn’t get too hot or too wet. I have a plastic container from walmart i keep the lid not locked into place and it lets enough air in, then I have some in a cardboard box it came in with a plastic bag inside the box loosely folded over at the top. Hay holds for a while as long as the conditions are right.

Get the rabbit that fits the personality you like. But remember, there are no perfect bunnies, so you might have some behavioral issues to train out. And with rabbits, it’s a lot of YOU adjusting to fit them – so take up things that they can chew etc rather than expecting them to not chew and other normal rabbit owner problems.

well i do like him, i mean there are no bad things about him, except for the fact that he peed on my mom and also he seemed to be a little cage aggressive? but i guess thats understandable since a lot of little kids just stick their hands in their and pet him. (maybe thats why he moved to a different petco) i touched his hay and touselled it so it made a noise and he attacked me ._. i went back a week later and he was moved to the very back of the room with a lid over his cage and i asked the employee about it and they said it was cause he figured out how to get out of the cage (understandle as the cage walls were about a foot high at the most and he had a little hut that he could stand on jump) but his cage seemed really dirty and messy… eh i dont know.. i guess he was scared! he seemed really nice for the most part. i like him but i want to wait just in case a “better” rabbit comes along. but i dont want to wait too long cause what if no rabbit comes along and he gets adopted? eh.. i dont know /:

I think you will find that many rabbits are territorial of their cages/homes, it’s a natural instinct that it meant for survival, it’s nothing against the person who is reaching into their cage. A lot of people recommend only going into a rabbit’s home to a little as possible, only to clean and give food, ect. and it’s better if the rabbit isn’t in it, rabbits need to have a sense that they have their own space to feel safe and to retreat to when they feel like it. Rabbits who are territorial of their cages are perfectly friendly outside of them.

The way to think about it is, do you like the rabbit? Do you feel that you and him are compatible? Is your home a good place for him? Try to remember not to keep expectations of a rabbit too high, rabbits are different than other animals, they don’t like to be held or cuddled and it’s best to keep things on their terms, pretty much you have to take what you can get Every rabbit is going to have some little quirk or something you’re not going to like. I guess what I’m trying to say is whichever rabbit you adopt don’t expect that there’s going to be “the perfect rabbit”, that’s a big thing for a little bunny to try to fulfill  There are going to be times where your bunny has an accident or destroys something you don’t want them to,  you’ve just got to love them no matter what.

For hay I use Stickerbunny’s method of keeping it in the box it came in and loosely folding the plastic bag, hay should neither be stored out in the open or completely airtight shut in something.

What to you would be a “better rabbit”? It’s important to not expect a cat or dog in a rabbit, they are not the same. Cage territorial is normal in rabbits, especially if he is not neutered yet – especially one in a shelter. The cage is his “safe spot” and his home, he doesn’t even know you, you’re a stranger and potential danger invading HIS territory. Even when you get buns home, a lot of them will be territorial about their cages as it is “their” spot. That is why it is suggested to clean and do maintenance when buns aren’t in the cage.

Don’t get him just because you think it is the only option, you need to click with a bun and find one you really like. There are homeless rabbits in need of adoption in very large numbers, so more will come along and it’s better to get one you are happy with than one you aren’t. Just keep the expectations realistic for a rabbit.

I’m just going to throw out there that you will also see a lot of change in the first months of owning a rabbit. Mine disliked humans all together and just wanted food and let out when I first got him but now he begs for attention and circles are feet when we come into the same room as him. I think most rabbits will become friendly in their own way if you treat them right. It sounds like you’ve already started on a good path preparing for one. And if I was you, I know that me going to see the same rabbit several times means I’m already attached if only a little. I think the rabbit would be happier somewhere he got to run around, binky, and explore rather than a pet store where he’s basically tortured by strangers picking him up all the time.
