When I was at the vet last, I mentioned giving raisins as a treat, and she looked at me like I was insane. She said that raisins can be toxic. There has been several cases of dogs dying after eating raisins, most likely fungicide building up in their systems. This struck me as a bit odd, a lot of you here give raisins to your buns, and I’ve never heard anything about this. Does anyone here know? Are raisins safe or not?

Is your vet a RABBIT vet, or a dog vet? Raisins are toxic – to dogs and cats. I would find a new vet, one that has experience with rabbits.

Grapes and raisins are just fine for rabbits. Obviously they need to be kept as a treat because they are high in sugar, but otherwise are a great treat!

Def find a new vet for your rabbit.

I’ll third find a new vet. Rabbits are considered an exotic pet, and their digestive systems are completely different than humans and most mammals.

No, my vet definitely knows rabbits. She’s the only exotic vet anywhere near town. I trust she knows what she’s doing, which is why I let her spay my rabbit. This is the only thing she’s told me that seems weird. I think her exact words were that they recommend raisins only for humans.
If no one else has heard of this, then I’ll just ignore it. She’s been very knowledgeable otherwise, so I wonder where this comes from?

I have heard vets say it about exotics (rabbits and birds), but only the dog/cat vets who “see exotics” but can’t answer what antibiotics are toxic to rabbits either (which meant I didn’t go to them!). The exotics vets (including my buns vets) are fine with raisins in my town – my vets been seeing buns for 20 years and dried fruit is a treat I take with me to the vet to make the buns feel better after the “evil” vet pokes at them. lol

Did she explicitly say they were toxic? Or maybe she doesn’t like them because they are sugary and anything that’s sugary isn’t good in large quantities.

I wouldn’t jump to conclusions about the vet just based on this one statement. She sounds like she is a good rabbit vet and has taken good care of your rabbits.

Raisins for rabbits are fine as a treat, but they aren’t toxic as far as I am aware like they are for dogs and cats.

She said it wasn’t the raisins that were toxic, but that fungicide on them can build up in the system. I didn’t quite buy it, as I know many people have fed their rabbits raisins their entire lives without issue.
I just wanted to see if anyone else has heard of this. Now I see you haven’t, I’ll just disregard her and keep raisins as a treat.

She has taken very good care of us. TC developed pasteurella, and right after her first course of antibiotics, she went into heat, which was a big surprise, because we though all along that she was a boy So she got spayed then, because she was an absolute terror. Then another bout of pasteurella… Last time I was there, I told her that as much as I like everyone there, I’m sick of seeing them

Alot of fruits have fungicides on them, so not sure why she would single out raisins specifically. Unless there is a brand maybe that has a bad track record? Ask for more information next time you talk to her, she may be able to give it to you.

And rabbits don’t go into “heat” – they have no breeding season, they can breed any time of the year when a male mates with them. Which is where the term breeds like bunnies comes from.

They don’t have any clue why raisins or grapes are toxic to dogs, just evidence that they are. They are fine for bunnies. Perhaps your vet doesn’t know…but I would either discuss why she thinks that or find another vet-should you not be comfortable with her after that.

That said, there are no raisins in my house. I realized…my dog eats the bunny poop. And if they don’t know what is the toxic element, then we don’t know if it’s in the bunny poo. So craisins and oxbow treats at my house instead
