Got a little bit of a dilema. We live in Florida and its usually nice and hot outside and the AC is on inside but these last few days it has been about 45 degrees outside. We live in an apartment and when we turn the heat on it sets off the fire alarm at random times. Sometimes right when we turn it on sometimes 20 minutes in sometimes 4 hours in. We have 2 bunnies and they FLIP OUT when the fire alarm goes off, like runs into walls, thumps, and farts (idk if thats normal but they do that when they get really scared). Anyways I’m wondering what temperature is too cold, I doubt it is 45 degrees inside the apartment but I’d say its anywhere from 50 to 60 degrees, is that too cold for them?

I’m not certain, but I would say that’s alright. It’s certainly better than the fire alarm scaring them half to death. No question in my mind. They might stay stiller as I’m pretty sure rabbits do some sort of vibration thing to stay warm. Been up most of the night and can’t really remember too well.

Off the top of my head I’d say below 30 would be “too cold.”

50-60 to my rabbits would be HEAVEN lol at 70 they flop in front of the A/C vent like they are burning up, so your buns are probably fine. You can fill up water bottles with warm water and place them on the floor and if the buns get cold, they can cuddle up to those for warmth. And maybe report to the landlord that your heater does that? Cause that is not normal nor do I think it’s really legal to have faulty heat in winter.

I would discuss the alarm going off with the landlord…that’s not right.

Bunnies like cool weather much more than people do – those temps are perfectly fine. In the winter we keep our house at 60 degrees all the time and the bunnies are more comfortable with it than I am 😛

Alright thanks a lot for the quick responses. And we’ve been in our apartment for about 2 years and I remember last winter we went to the office and they said it happens in all the apartments cause we only turn the heat on like once a year and hair and dust etc are in the vents and the heat burns them and it smells pretty bad and causes the fire alarm to go off. Also, what about the farting deal? It’s happened a few times specifically last night with the fire alarm and another time we tried putting our two rabbits together in a pen (both males) and they went absolutely nuts, like in a cartoon when two animals fight an it’s a tornado of dust and fur, that’s pretty much what happened. And yah it smelt like a stink bomb went off.

Rabbits can release a scent that smells quite skunky – aggression, fear and hormonal marking can make them release it. I am guessing that is what you are talking about. Are both your males neutered?

Given that not cleaning out the ducts can release animal feces, fur, germs, dust and pollen into the air .. I would think that would fall into the improper maintenance of their building. Someone with bad asthma would be set off into an attack from that. Check your lease and the leasing laws in your area, you can easily find them online.

Yah that’s probably what I’m talking about and yes they are both neutered one is 9 months old and the other is 8 months old

My house is super coldd… usually 56 degrees and the bunnies are so happy. My bunny lives in the bathroom so it gets chilly at night but she loves it <3
