Hi, I work at my local animal shelter and seem to have brought home fleas.

Anyway, I have two cats and my Bo Bunny.  I was on Dr. Foster and Smith website and found Advantage II for cats.  I was reading that Advantage is ok for rabbits, would Advantage II be ok as well?  On Dr. Foster and Smith, it says for cat use only.  I’d imagine if it was used off label, it wouldn’t be posted, so I just wanted to check.

        Thanks!

Here’s what the House Rabbit Society has to say about Fleas:

“Flea season is another of nature’s annoyances. As our handout stated at a recent groomer’s conference in New Jersey, cat flea products are generally safe for rabbits with fleas. Advantage and Revolution are thought to be safe in most rabbits. In treating a rabbit’s fleas aggressively the cure can be more stressful than the infestation.
We have never recommended a flea dip for rabbits, and recently we received a very alarming report of a death occurring after a flea shampoo, followed by a pyrethrin dip. We cannot be certain as to the specific cause of death-the stress of the bath or the ingredients in the shampoo or dip-so we recommend avoiding both.

Our foster homes have been able to use room sprays (pump-type) and eliminate fleas from the environment for 6 months or so. We spray only one room at a time and move the rabbits out of that room for at least 24 hours.”

Regarding your specific question about Advantage II, I am not familiar with it or the difference. I do know that the Kitten dosage of Advantage is the one most recommended for a bunny. I’d suggest using that.

I recently posted a similar topic, and the conclusion was that yes, it is safe, but call your vet for the right dose. It is probably the kitten size, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

I almost wonder if it was a pyrethroid or permethrin dip that killed the rabbit, as it is also deadly for cats. I am not sure about the status of pyrethrin either, and as a bath alone isn’t good for rabbits, it isn’t worth further investigation.
