This sounds really awful, but does anyone have a secret for cleaning snot out of the fur? Little Toby came to me four years ago with recurring respiratory problems and every now and then he gives a big sneeze and it’s sticky and glomms onto his whiskers and feet and it’s really hard to get off.

I’ve tried soaking it with a very wet warm washcloth, but you just kinda wind up spreading it or rubbing it in and eventually I trim the hair to get rid of it.

My vet is covering the medical side of the problem and I asked her today during the exam if she had any secrets and she could only suggest warm water or a tiny bit of Dawn. He gets a little butt bath once a week, but it does little to remove this yuck.

I’d appreciate advice from anyone who deals with this from time to time  😉

I’d use the tiny bit of dawn, its wonderful for removing the gunk.

Oh no, poor snotty little Toby :~( I would give that Dawn a try because I know they use it on wildlife so it has to be gentle.

I’ve used Dawn on my cat before, he had to be taken from his mom (who was a farm cat) very early so he never really learned to groom himself all that well sometimes he gets soft food gunk in the fur on his paws and chest, it works great.

thanks! I’ll get some tomorrow and have it handy the next time I can get hold of him. (after his monthly tooth trim he stays out of my reach for a few days….lol, like all I have to do is put down some smelly cat food and he’ll come running, silly boy)

I wrote down Dawn to get some in the house for us based on these recommendations.

I was also thinking the opposite: if you gently put some plain corn starch on the gooey areas it should absorb the moisture. Once dry, you could comb it off. (It works on damp butts.) This might only work on liquids like urine, not goo, so it could backfire and create rocks. Hmmm. Stick with the Dawn.

I thought about corn starch too, RabbitPam, after going back through old forum posts, but this stuff is more like super glue than urine. The small patch on his cheek that I tried to soak off after I smeared it dried hard and shiny. Before I started trimming the long hair off his feet it would get like little rocks… poor baby. Some morning I hope I don’t get up to find his nose stuck to his front feet!

It’s not always this bad thank goodness.

I was afraid of that. (Remember as a kid getting sleepies in our own eyes and waking up to find the lids stuck shut? Was that only me? LOL)

Time to buy some Dawn and bunny washclothes. Maybe his sneezing will lesson over time, too.

hahahah, I remember my kids waking up like that. I did go through my old childcare books, but I guess it’s not often that a kid sneezes in their hair (hare?)

LOL  Good idea, though. I would have thought they’d have a suggestion for when another kid sneezes on your kid’s hare, uh, hair.

Another shout for Dawn. I don’t have experience with using it on rabbits. But if you have other pets, it also doubles as an awesome flea shampoo! Killa fleas dead, without all the heavy pesticide chemicals of flea shampoos!

that’s true, my3monkees, I had forgotten about that. Several years ago I took in a guinea piggie with all kinds of skin problems and weekly baths in Dawn and Desenex cleared up 90% of it in less than 3 weeks. And she was ‘squeaky’ clean! sorry, couldn’t help it 😉

                              by the way, Welcome!

Dawn sounds like the way to go it seems. Bet you didn’t think you’d be bringing in the new year like this kralspace. :p

If Dawn doesn’t do the trick then maybe some mineral oil (like paraffin) to work out the snot glue, then dawn+water to remove the oil?
