Not sure what to do about her…she’s been off her greens again for a few weeks so I emaild Dana Krempels, and she suggested that the vet do head radiographs so I’ll ask the vet about that.

We are going in on Friday for another tooth trim to see if that helps.

Very frustrating!  At least she’s eating pellets.

Bobby’s getting his quarterly tooth trim as well.

Jeez! Tell them that the Healing Bunny Fairy is going to descend on your house if they don’t behave.

You said they are mostly the same approximate ages, right? It just sounds like those you acquired at the same time are hitting that point where they need medical attention.

(Not to sound unfeeling, but in a car it’s the 7th year, regardless of the make or mode. Then again, I hear that’s true of a marriage, too.)

Oh, I’m sorry Sarita. I imagine Dana suggested the head radiographs to make sure there wasn’t some infection causing pain due to pressure of chewing. (???)   Does Ms. Toffee seem to eat her pellets gingerly?

I sure hope that the solution is found and it’s something simple.  Vibes!!

We have to move the appt to this coming up Wed because my vet is opening a new clinic and she ordered the dental stuff but apparently it isn’t in yet or she’s not ready to do anything at the clinic like this just yet…perfectly understandable and I feel fine waiting for her since Toffee is still eating the pellets and treats and sometimes a carrot or broccoli floret…not ideal, but it’s food.

BB, that is exactly what Dana suggested and I think it’s a good idea, although I cannot help but wonder if perhaps it’s still a low grade infection that the round of baytril did not completely cure, so I’ll suggest that to the vet as well.

I really cannot tell if she’s eating the pellets more gingerly, to be honest. I’ve never really given her pellets until recently trying to find something to get her to eat.

I think those oat/parsley pellets might be a wee bit softer. They seem to crumble more, so maybe she’d like those instead.

Oh, and I’m reminded that when I had Sammy on Critical Care, they suggested I make little balls like cookies. Very little water, but if she likes the taste, they can be firm and dry seeming, but still be good for her. Just an idea.

Adding some (((vibes))) for Toffee. Sarita, this goes along with what RabbitPam suggested, but when I was looking for advice on how to give medication to Hodari, I found a recipe at the HRS for older bunnies, or those with tooth problems, or who aren’t eating on their own. It takes half a banana, 1/3 or 1/2 cup of pellets, some rolled oats, and powdered acidophilus, like Prozyme. You grind it in a coffee grinder, and make it as firm or as mushy as your bunny likes, and roll into balls. Commercially, I guess this would be like the homemade version of Critter Be Better. I just wondered if something like that might help Toffee. I hope she feels better soon.

Well Toffee got her teeth done again today and they were all cattywonkers (not a vet term :~)

The front incisors appeared splintered and the back were all out of whack because she was chewing sideways. The vet did a head radiograph and is going to show it to her radiologist. We think it’s just the old age dental problems coming on. She said that she thought she was probably eating the pellets and treat foods because it was easier to chew than the greens which would require her to chew more sideways. She did seem to want to eat the greens I put down for her tonight though so I’m hoping she’ll be okay for awhile. It’s very possible it may take a few more dental procedures to get her mouth aligned again.

Bobby’s lost another molar during his dental procedure and it was time for his dental filing too. Probably need to do every 3 instead of 4 months for his dental exams.

So buprenex and metacam for the next few days for both of them. I feel better having had this done too.

your poor bunnies! I think they have more dental problems than I do. I don’t guess it would help to dice up her greens real small. When I first got Toby it was a few days before he could get his teeth trimmed so they told me to do that so he could scoop them up, but since Ms Toffee’s problem is in the back teeth that may not help any.

I hope the medicine helps everyone and that you have something to make you feel better too.

I am also glad your vet was able to check out what was going on. (Though I know you will also be waiting to find out what the radiographs reveal)

So if a bunny has a splintered incisor, does it eventually grow out, or does it continue to splinter with new growth?

Poor Ms Toffee and her cattywonker choppers! But she and Bobby are in good hands and so we’ll just continue to send vibes for good senior health and healing vibes.

The vet called me today and said that the radiologist saw what he thought were small abscesses in her molars so we are going to start her on Baytril again…it’s funny because the last bout of baytril did seem to get her eating her greens again so I think perhaps it was the same problem then which makes sense that now her teeth are not in good shape. Her bloodwork did show a mild infection too so that again makes sense.

The vet thinks we are going to have do molar trims much more frequently with her – we are going to start with every 4 weeks and go from there.

Luckily she is eating her treats and pellets and seems to be liking the broccoli florets so I am loading her up on that. I’ll be very interested to see if she starts eating greens again once we finish this new dose of baytril like she did the last time. I did ask the vet to make sure that I had enough baytril dosed for a longer period of time as last time it wasn’t for a full 2 weeks.

BB, I’ll find out about those splintered incisors when I take her back in a few weeks for another dental exam.

Thanks everyone. LPT, she is not sure at this point how often Toffee will need molar trims – Pepe used to have them every 4 weeks. I think we really don’t know what is going to happen with her teeth, we are going to do an exam at 4 weeks to see how they look. I’m hoping to go longer but between her very first and the second it wasn’t much more than 5 weeks. Maybe clearing up the infection will make a difference too (I hope).

Hopefully the baytril will help heal that abscess. Rucy always was having issues with her teeth. I actually did the same thing you did at first — took her more often until we got to know her tooth growth cycle (though it changed later –slowed even more with age). Though it was a pain to go so often at first, it did help establish how her teeth were really progressing at the time, and then from there we developed a more realistic schedule for her.

Hopefully for your pocketbook sake and for the stress level sake of Mrs. Toffee, she won’t need to get trimmed every month. Keeping fingers crossed.

Just an update – Ms. Toffee is doing great – she is eating her greens and I’m happy about that. I’m going to wait to take her in for another dental check since she’s doing so well. I think the baytril really helped. She’s diving into the greens just like she used to.
