she’s been home 3 hours? Thats normal. My girls didn’t eat much at all the first 24 hours. Try putting her favorite treats out to tempt her appetite.

yup.. I don’t think she have eatened for like 5 hours now. I tried to stick at least a tiny slice of carrot for her but she won’t even eat it. I left her a bowl of pellets and veggies but nope.. She won’t go in her litter box, i just changed her tall one for a shorter one but she still pees and poops on the towel. She’s just laying down and sometimes her eyes closes. Shes inactive and been like this ever since. She did poop and pee , didn’t eat.. though

She’ll need time. The meds they give her will make her a bit queasy. As long as she eats by the same time tomorrow, should be fine. Call the vet if she doesn’t

                Has she eaten yet?

Olivia felt awful after her spay and took some time to eat as well. Try offering really fragrant herbs like parsley or cilantro. They often entice a bunny to eat.

Take a peek at her incision site to make sure it isn’t really swollen or bright red. Otherwise, it’s pretty normal. Just put out an assortment of her favorite foods and leave her alone for a short while. Check on her to see if and what she’s eaten. Give more of that next.

Some vets use older types of anesthesia than others, and the wake up period is longer, with more side effects. Also, if she has pain meds in her system she may be groggy from it. She has had major surgery and is uncomfortable for the next day or two at least.

Also, ask the vet if they gave you any painkiller meds (usually metacam liquid fed by syringe to the mouth). She may have had it all wear off and actually be feeling some pain. Usually painkillers help and are needed during the 1st 12 – 24 hours.

Poor baby! Did they tell you what pain meds they gave her for post spay pain management? You might need to take her back in for an extra pain med dose. I had similar issues with my Layla, where they hadn’t given her appropriate pain medication and she had to have more. After that she was fine.

Grinding the teeth is a sign of pain, she should be nibbling something by now even if it’s just a few bites of a veggie. I would call up the vet and discuss her problems and they should let you know at what point they want to see her back in if she doesn’t improve. And if they didn’t give pain meds, you will probably need to get some from them.

i didn’t get pain meds for her but she just started eating her veggies, not her hay though. she was jumping around on the rug, yesterday she was tip toeing.. today she’s more active.. Do you still think i need the pain meds because my parents are going to pay for it and shes actually eating

I think it’s fine if she is eating. Restrict her activity level though.

She will most likely eat the greens first so encourage this, then hay, then lastly pellets.

As long as she is eating and isn’t showing obvious signs of distress from pain, you’re probably OK. Limit her jumping and any movement that might tear stitches for a few more days, last thing you want is to have to take her back in because she tore the stitches out. My girl ate veggies first, then she would let me hand feed her some hay – if you have alfalfa hay that encourages them a bit more than regular grass hay, I kept some around for the surgery post-op time. And keep an eye out for signs of infection. Does she still have runny droppings and poopy bottom?

she doesnt have any runny poop but the poop are still glossy looking. she keeps on grinding her teeth. im feeding her blended food right now. she only eats solid carrots :i checked her poop and it has weird shapes. i tried feeding her hay but she just breaks it and doesn’t swallow it.

Well, it might be a good idea to get those pain meds then.

The poo’s may be funny for a few days after the procedure.

They didn’t give her pain meds?? :'( I would call and ask to get a couple days worth, it makes all the difference in the world. Its a serious surgery. My vet gives 5-7 days worth for spays.

Then yes I would get the meds – it isn’t expensive, or at least at my vet it isn’t, it only cost me $12 to get metacam for my girl. She should be eating on her own by now and the tooth grinding is her saying “It hurts”. She had her tummy cut open and sewed back together, it is painful – in humans it requires a week of bed rest and pain meds (unless they are like my mother, who was climbing on top of the roof to repair a leak after a day). Her droppings will be off until she’s eating more / the medicine is out of her system, but as long as it isn’t runny or messing up her fur that is normal.

I’m going through the same thing right now with my Ellie. She got spayed on Monday and still isn’t eating. I took her in this morning and they gave her some meds to stimulate her gut and set me up with critical care. I’m getting her to lap up the crital care off a spoon. Maybe if you call your vet they can get some for you too. It wasn’t expensive.

Well you could phone the vet first and find out how much the medication would be…that way you know what you are dealing with money wise.

I put kale/apple/pear in a blender and fed that to my bunny after his neuter, maybe your girl would like that? I was given 3 days worth of metacam though + benebac, I don’t know why your vet didn’t give any for a spay, those are much more invasive.

With pain meds she should be more inclined to eat on her own. You can kind of make your own critical care by grinding up your current pellets and mix them with water to make a little slurry. Meds are the best cost wise.

Yaay went to the spay&neuter clinic with Shumi and they gave her pain med and also this liquid absorber into her skin. They gave me two ziploc bags of critical care. right now Shumi is starting to eat her hay and eats the critical care if i give it to her. Im not sure if she will eat pellets yet but the medicine is working fine. She still grinds her teeth a little bit. She seems waaayy better now.

Hey everyone. I have a female Netherland Dwarf X called Molly who is roughly just over a year old and weighs roughly 1.5kgs now. I took her to be spayed yesterday and don’t I know it! Bless her, she’s got such a grumpy face and she really feels sorry for herself (totally understandable knowing what she’s just been through). She’s now approx 18hrs post surgery, she hasn’t eaten and isn’t drinking even with all her favourite foods! I’ve even cracked out the grated carrots (she had to have her top and bottom incisors removed in a prior surgery due to being unable to grind them down) and she loves grated carrot as a treat. I’m really worried about her, I know she’s in pain and she already has metacam and had a shot of opiate at the Vets this morning. I’ve been given fibreplex to give her three times a day and also a recovery paste to syringe feed her but she keeps spitting it all out. Now she’s hiding behind the TV and I feel so sad for her! I’m taking her back to the Vet this afternoon to see what we do next.

Any other ideas in what I could do? We have been through this before when Molly was just a few months old. When we took her home she suddenly became ill and we didn’t know why, turns out she had Coccidiosis and was on a large amount of treatment to get her over it.

I hope she pulls through this, I’d be lost without her.

She didn’t feel like moving unless she needed some hay or water, but that is it. She looked miserable. Not every rabbit is the same, but she could just be cranky and just out of it for a few days. A spay is more in depth of a procedure than a neuter. The vet had to go inside her tiny body. If she doesn’t eat by tomorrow night I would call the vet just to be sure. Is she eat hay and drinking water yet?
