So when my brother saw how much hay my bun was eating he suggested that maybe i get a bale of hay from a local farm ( As we have lots by us in vermont)…. And the bale would last for ever!!! and be way cheaper.

Does anyone do this? Or does anyone have suggestions to save money on buying hay?

        Thanks!

You can, if it is HORSE quality timothy, orchard or oat – you don’t want the alfalfa mix if your bun is adult. And you don’t want bedding quality, you want horse eating quality. But if that is available, it is quite the money saver. We don’t have anywhere near that sells non-alfalfa so I buy 50lb boxes from oxbow, still cheaper than buying it from a store and lasts forever.

Yes, several members get bales at local farms. I will leave it to them to advise you further. Stickerbunny’s advice is very good. Any Vermonters here who can recommend a particular place or brand?

You can buy Mini Bales from the BB store, which I like because they last quite a while (months) but I know the source is careful and clean and I can store it inside next to my bunny’s house for my own convenience.

I buy locally grown timothy hay, from the equine rescue I volunteer at. I get a 50lb-ish bale for $4 (it was almost as long as my backseat). With just one 3.5lb bunny eating it since March I’m only about halfway through it. Tait absolutely loves it, he eats a pile about 3x his size/day. You will probably notice some pieces of grass or other plant material in a large bale, because it is not gone through like the stuff you find at pet stores. I’ve never found anything scary though. I know lots of rabbit & horse rescues will sell hay to raise money for their rescue, so maybe see if you have something like that in your area?

I ordered some online, drfostersandsmith.com, a 50lb bale of orchard. It wasn’t cheap, 70 bucks I think, but still much much less than I was paying by the bag.

I buy hay by the bale as well. It’s about $15 and lasts my two bun months and months! It’s so much fresher than the bagged stuff.

SirThumpsey, I’ve been in the same situation, which is why the mini bales in a plastic container with a flexible lid has worked well for me. Got horse farms all over around here that I really can’t buy from. Oh well.

You can sometimes ask them to sell you a couple of flakes instead of just the bale and a lot of places will do it. Or, if you know anyone else who has buns, or horses, go to buy together and split it up. Though, honestly, 50lbs of hay once you break it up out of a bale fits nicely into those plastic storage tubs they sell at wal-mart (would take two) and then stack them on top of each other in a closet (just cut a couple of small holes to let the hay breath). I keep my hay in the bunny room in a plastic tub and Stickers likes jumping on top of it, so doubles as a toy. lol

I used to get hay from my state’s chapter of the House Rabbit Society for $7. I generally buy about 50 lbs and call it a bale but when we buy hay for our horses the bales are much heavier. I store the hay in a huge box because I heard somewhere hay has to “breathe” to stay fresh? Unfortunately Wilbur is so picky and now she won’t touch other hay much so I’m stuck buying 50 lbs of Oxbow which is not particularly cheap haha. Usually lasts about 2-3 months, which I love.

I bought 100+ pound hay bale and had it since October? We kept it outside in a shack but I don’t think we covered it good enough and so it started becoming dusty; moldy. Im looking forward for smaller amounts like 30 pounds next time since I can’t handle a hay bale that big.

Question: Will Binkybunny hay last months for two bunnies who use hay as litter & food?
