I had Chester out for his usual out of cage play time, and I think when he was zipping around he pulled his claw on the carpet. After he’s out, I usually put him on a towel on the table and brush him, since he’s usually too tired to fuss. The towel happens to be white, and I noticed a bit of blood. I was able to find that it was coming from his front right paw. I kept him sitting on some white paper towels until the bleeding stopped and I had my husband clean out his litter box and cage before I put him back. It only bled for maybe 5 minutes and he seems ok right now. I’ll probably call the vet tomorrow, obviously today they won’t be open since it’s a holiday. I came here and searched the forum and found this thread:   https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tab…fault.aspx   Most people say to look for signs of infection, I’m just wondering exactly what I should look for?

Signs of infection are redness, heat in the area, swelling, and pain. These are all things you can look for visually (including pain like if the bunny is not hopping on the paw right). Buns may tear off their claws from time to time, and I can imagine it hurts but it is usually okay, doesn’t require intervention, and grows back normally. Keep an eye on him. And keeping his nails trimmed short should prevent this from occurring in the future.

Beka was right on with what to look for. It was good that you cleaned the cage and litterbox- the nail will soon start to heal/form a protective barrier so it is not so sensitive.

Thanks everyone! He seems to be doing ok, there hasn’t been any blood in his cage and he’s being his usual rambunctious self. I’ll continue to keep a close eye on him and his paw, and hopefully everything will be fine.

Sounds good. For future reference, like when you go to trim his nails at another time, it’s good to keep a bit of plain Corn Starch handy so if you accidentally cut the quick, which is the vein that runs to the nail and is really easy to snip by accident, you can dip it in the corn starch and it stops the bleeding from lasting so long. He probably injured the quick so that’s why it bled so much. those really bleed a lot when cut.
