Hi all! Long time no see! Sweep has been doing just fine, and her wet-sounding sneezes have gone away completely (though anything dries up in winter in Beijing). I’m buying her a new cage for Christmas that will be bigger and better, as well as a nice scratching pad she can use instead of the old towel she has now, haha.

Anyway, she’s starting to shed big time, and while I know that’s no cause for concern, I just wanted to know if there was any particular type of brush that I should use to help her through it. She seems to be tugging and and chewing on what she does get, and I worry that doing that too often isn’t healthy for her.

        Any advice would be great.

        Thanks all, and happy holidays!

          Happy Holidays to you too!

I recommend the Hair Buster comb, sold in the BB store. It was highly recommended years ago when it was hard to find, so began being stocked on websites because users liked it so much. Great during shedding season.

A gentle non-shed brush would be a cat or rabbit brush in a big box pet store. They get out less, but is good for daily use in general.

If you order one and are waiting, just wet your hands and smooth them down Sweep’s body and the fur will stick to you. It’s easier to wash it off yourself than off your bunny. They also make mitts that do that, again usually ordered online.

The Hairbuster is the ONLY comb that has ever worked for me, and I have tried a large variety.

Until then, you can tug at the loose bits and they will come right out. They will also pull more hair with them. It won’t take any effort at all to pull at the loose hair, it just comes off in tufts. I am 99% sure it does not hurt the bunny, however, I think it tickles or feels weird because I do get a reation when I do it, but it doesn’t seem like pain so much as annoyance. Another method that works pretty well but is kind of a pain, get your hands wet and pet your bun, your hands will be covered in hair, rinse them off, pet again. The key is to just get the loose hair to stick to your hands.

I found this link http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-7/gi.html that has a lot of information about impaction and what to look for if your bun ends up with any problems. I know this isn’t the case and you are just looking for combs, but it never hurts to have the knowledge and it’s good knowledge to have around shedding season. 🙂

I didn’t think you could order from BB out of the country?

I’ve read good things about the hairbuster, but you might be able to find a knock off or similar comb at your local petstore. I’ve read to not use the slicker kind because it can hurt their skin. I usually just use the water-hand method, both my girls like it because it simulates grooming.

I found with my Powder my own soft bristle hair brush works best lol it gets out a ton of his hair and he actually likes how it feels, so he won’t fight me when I brush him. That and picking out the fur with my hands is what I use. With Stickers, a wet hand is the only thing that works since she’s a rex and her hair doesn’t shed much anyway.

Most brushes don’t work with Monkey, as she’s so dang tiny. I just pluck her and use the damp hands trick. I did buy the hairbuster from BB for Squirrel, as his fluffy butt has very thick fur. With Moose and Smudge, a regular slicker brush and a zoom groom rubber brush thingy work great
