Question 1: Do you guys think a screen on top of yesterdays news and clay litter underneath is safe for my bunnies because

I figured that newspaper and hay is just gross and my bunnies prefer to pee somewhere else instead of the hay& newspaper!

Im planning to put a thick layer of cat litter and then a inch of yesterday’s news..

Question 2:If this is not safe, what do you guys use beside wood stove pellets/horse stall pellets to help lower the cost of your litter since

Yesterday’s News is pricey for my cheap parents..?.

        Question 3: Is aspen good?

1, clay litter is never ok for rabbits, and they only need an inch or less of litter anyway and toss it out every day or 2

2, I’ve used Cellsorb, its 20 bucks for 40lbs and lasts a good couple of months with 1 bun. Now I happily use wsps

          3, aspen is ok

1: If using yesterday news, you don’t need the clay underneath. Clay is bad for bunnies. Hay is a necessary thing for them, and its natural for them to eat and go at the same time. I always put my bunnies hay in the litter box.

2: Wood pellets are suitable replacements for yesterday news, and very very cheap. Horse stall bedding can also be used. If using wood stove pellets, make sure no accelerant is added.

            3: Aspen is totally fine.

Amusing note: My web browser/this forum think I spelled accelerant wrong but I didn’t

Last year, when my job gave me extremely short hours, I started cutting costs. I switched from CareFresh to wood stove pellets. I bought 5 bags of WSP from my current place of employment. I have only one through 1 bag so far, hahah!

Everything is going to be pricey compared to wood stove pellets. What is your concern with wood pellets, why don’t you want to use them?

Like Sam’s Human, I also used Cell-Sorb from my local pet store before switching to WSP. The Cell-Sorb worked okay, altho I had to use more in the box (not as absorbent) and it did not cover odor very well. I eventually had to switch when we needed to cut costs. In my area, Cell-Sorb was $26 per 40lb bag, WSP were $6 per 40lb bag… a savings of $20 per bag!!!

I found that a happy medium if you’re not comfortable with the wood stove pellets (in case of additives) is Feline Pine. Those pellets are safe, very cheap compared to other brands, and work the same way. I LOVE Aspen, but it is more $ for the pellets.

However, while it is an absolute no-no to use pine shavings (dangerous) it is safe to use Aspen shavings, and that is much cheaper than aspen pellets. I happen to use both, pellets underneath and a layer of shavings for softness. The aspen is 4x the odor control, and lasts longer.

I use a cozy n fresh ( I think its a feline pine? ) I get it at tractor supply for ~$6 for a big bag that lasts a long time, much better compared to the $20 bags of carefresh I was buying that I hated

I use Yesterdays news, wood stove pellets, feline pine etc-all very much the same, just depends on if I can get them. Clay is a no no, no matter what. If you want more absorbancy you could line with paper towels underneath. It’s a bit yucky to clean out, but I always empty and then put them in the shower so that’ sno problem. I didn’t find it did that much and paper towels are never in high supply at my house so I don’t do that anymore but it is an option.
