So Tipsy just got home from her spay and she is a little groggy.  I have her in a large breed dog kennel with a few comfy towels to sleep on, some things to chew on, her water and food bowls, and her litterbox.  She peed as soon as I put her in.  Now she is just sleeping in her litterbox… is that ok with her stitches?  I put in some comfy Carefresh in to make it more cushion-y and more sanitary.  I also put some lettuce in her box in hopes she will eat it soon.  When should I be worried that she isnt eating or drinking?

Yes, if that is where she is most comfortable. What kind of stitches are they? Are they staples or invisible stitches?

Give her at least 24 hours – she is just going to sleep and want to be left alone for now. I would just make her comfortable and then let her be.

They are dissolvable stitches on the inside and she is glued on the outside.

Oh and make sure there is no drafts and it’s warm where she is at. We have a hard time regulating our body temperature after anesthesia.

The litterbox is where my girls lounged after their spays too They were both groggy, and didn’t eat til the next day, so don’t freak if she doesn’t want nommies right away. I did find that offering their favorite treats first helped get their appetite going.

I am a worried mom. My heart was beating so fast and I kept checking the clock every hour, sigh of relief when the vet said everything went well. She does have rather cold ears, but my parents like a warm house and keep it at 70 degrees so I hope that is enough. If not, I brought a rubber bottle that holds warm water with a sock in case she wants to snuggle with it, and I also have her favorite stuffed animal rabbit in her cage to snuggle up to. Is there anything special that any of you did when your rabbits came home from their surgeries? Anything I can do to make things comfortable?

I think the 70 degrees is plenty. I know it’s very stressful waiting to hear from the vet :~(

The best thing you can do is to not fuss over her and let her rest. Fussing stresses you out and her out. Healing vibes to Ms. Tipsy and comforting vibes to you.

Not really, I just let them rest. 70 is perfectly fine for her, don’t worry about her getting too cold, provided there aren’t any drafts.

Thanks Monkeybun and Sarita… I am just not used to seeing my poor little girl like this. But she is in my nice quiet bedroom with a blanket over the top just in case. Thanks for the much needed vibes and advice!!

                          Update on Tipsy:
Woke up this morning to the sound of a crinkling grass mat only to find her wide awake and playing/chewing it. I sat there watching her so happy to see her playing that a few seconds later she found her water bowl and drank the whole thing dry! Now she has eaten a few leaves of lettuce and is playing with a grass stick feeling good! Acting like her normal self. She even tries to push my hand out of the way trying to get out of the kennel when I go to close the door hahaha (no matter how big it is, it is never big enough). I just have the biggest smile on my face this morning… my baby girl is doing good!

I have another question… I didnt want to take up room by putting up another topic so I figured I would just add to my existing one.
Tipsy is becoming very restless sitting in her kennel (Mind you it is a large bree dog kennel with ALL of her toys, this thing fits our great dane). I know she cant have too much strenuous exercise, but would it be ok if I were to put her in my bathroom for a little bit so she can stretch her legs out?
And another question… how long did it take for your buns to recover from their spay and be able to romp and jump on things?

That’s fine to do that. The vet recommends at least 5 days.

Agreed. The bathroom will be a nice change for her, and she really can run around, but not jump, the first week as long as her site is clean and not red or swollen, etc. Jumping is after a week or 2, depending on how well the site has healed.
