A NEW BUNNY ABODE CONDO!!! Just ordered an hour ago, Dutchess Marie is going to be the proud queen of the kingdom of a new bunny abode condo in a week. I told her she was getting one, and she just blinked an eye at me and went into a little ball. Ssooo it would seem I’m the excited one for now! I can’t wait for it to come now, I got her the double level 48″ condo from Leith Petwerks which is seen here http://www.leithpetwerks.com/prodpa…code=BA200
Last week Dutchess somehow got hurt in her current cage, and I suspect its from the ramp/platform she has, that she tried to jump up on it rather than walk up the wavy ramp and missed, falling and hitting her back. I let her out when I got home from work and she dragged her bottom rather than hopping, and I freaked and called the vet in like a minute, and thank goodness they had an appointment right away less than a hour from the time I called with her regular vet (thanks to the powers that be). So I wisked her off quick and we did x-rays and had flex tests and physical exam, etc. and she didn’t break any bones or separate any discs thank goodness. I got to see the x-rays and everything, and in the first one she had a full bladder and in the second she had an empty one, so they looked and sure enough she had peed between the time they took the x-rays! We also got to see our normal vet tech who is awesome, and the vet gave me Metacam for Dutchess and told me to keep her in her cage for 7-10 days, and after about 5-7 days I could let her out in a small, flat room for increasing amounts of time.
I took away her platform and ramp and left her with the flat cage, suspecting that is the cause of her injury no one actually witnessed. After three days Dutchess got so depressed I let her out for 30 minutes in my room and boy did that do wonders for her morale! She looked much more bright and alert, even still being cooped up in her cage. So the next few days after I’ve let her about 30 minutes and she is hopping normally again now. I know she isn’t 100%, she still can’t fully really around to groom her back end and she isn’t stretching out, but at least she’s moving fluidly and doesn’t seem to be in much discomfort anymore.
So while she’s been cooped up I’ve been on an internet hunt for a new cage because I never liked the platform/wavy ramp set up in the first place, but it was largest cage I could find when I first got her. It’s not easy finding a good rabbit enclosure! I found cages that had only one level and no ramp at all, and ones that had steeper more worrisome ramps and platforms! After a few days I remembered seeing cages listed on Leith Petwerks so I checked that out and used a measuring tape to see how what it was compared to what Dutchess currently has, and one level is larger than what she’s got now. The ramp is straight with the wood traction pieces and it goes straight up the level, it doesn’t have an open platform she can fall from. I plan on putting her food/water/litterbox/hay on the bottom easy to clean plastic floor, and on the carpeted top level I plan to put TOYS ^___^
Anyway, to make a long story even longer, Dutchess is getting a brand new bunny abode condo for Christmas and her slave gets some peace of mind for safety and space.
