I am using softwood shavings{NOT cedar} for my rabbit’s bedding.I have heard that shavings cause respitory issues. Is this true?? I have been using shavings for my rabbit his whole life. I put the shavings outside of his litterbox for him to sleep on{i have rabbit litter in his litterbox}. He has been getting alot of eye boogers{dry when ever i see it} in the corners of his eyes, is this a cold or is he allergic to the shavings? Ive used carefresh in the past but it just got too expensive. I was considering to switch back over to carefresh….but im still not posotive!

        Thankyou

Yes it is true. The eye problems very well could be from the shavings, shavings are dusty. Have you tried Yesterday’s News? You could also try wood stove pellets or horse stall pellets, the pelleting process takes away the harmful chemicals that are in shavings.

Pine and cedar are the culprits, the aromatic oils can cause respiratory and liver problems. Aspen shavings are fine though.

Well like we said in the other thread, you don’t need shavings or carefresh for bedding, you only need a couple bowlfulls for the litterbox. Wood Stove Pellets are a good litter, about 4 bucks for a 40lb bag. Just make sure it doesn’t say with accelerant on the bag.

Yes, I would encourage as mentioned before to stop using any bedding. It’s unnecessary and it’s more difficult to clean a cage with a bunch of shavings.

What size cage are you using anyway? That could be alot to clean if you are using an adequate cage size.

I was thinking you were talking about litter. I think I mentioned this in your other thread but bedding is going to make it more difficult to completely litter train your rabbit. Carpet and blankets are best to put on the floor for something soft on the bunny’s paws. I also second Sarita’s question, what is the size of the cage?
