I’m a strong believer that personality is not dependant upon breed.
There is a breed stereotype that dwarfs are high strung, hyper and such. I have one that has an attitude and is the least hyper. She is really lazy.

Indeed personality really doesn’t go by breed, but by bun. Rex bunnies are sold in pet stores and said to be great pets – mine is hyper, high strung, anti-social and really not very friendly, but I still love her. Others may be friendly, or cuddly, it all depends on the rabbit and how it was raised / it’s own personality. If you want a rabbit because of the PERSONALITY rather than anything else, go to a shelter and find an adult bun that fits what you want (babies are all generally the same and their personality doesn’t develop until after puberty).

Another vote for the “it depends on the bun, not the breed” opinion. Plenty of people have picked up a baby of a certain breed because of stereotype, only to find out that theirs is completely different. It’s a gamble when you pick a baby…you can never tell what kind of personality you’re going to end up with!

Personality definitely depends on the rabbit, not the breed. I have a 3 pound lop bunny and her personality is very different than my friend’s lop bunny. Best, guaranteed way to pick a bunny in my opinion is to adopt a rabbit not based on gender, coloring, breed, or age but on personality alone. Really, I’ve done it twice and I am so happy. Adult rabbits have already gone through that crazy teenager stage, have a set personality, and are ready to be a good companion. Oh and rabbits from shelters are already altered, saving you $300-500.

I will also put in my two cents that personality is very independent of breed. Meeting adult rabbits and having the opportunity to interact with them will be your best chance to choose one that is right for you.

I have a mini rex who is very opinionated but loves pets. I have a mini lop who is a high-strung/skittish and will only now tolerate being pet (after having him for over 3 years.) Breed stereotypes are all over the board.

Are you planning on purchasing a rabbit or adopting from a shelter/rescue?

I’ll jump in with everyone else and say that personality isn’t really dependent on breed. Dogs are bred to have specific personalities and abilities – rabbits are bred to look like a breed standard with no standard for personality. Of course nobody wants a mean bunny who bites, but breeders aren’t going out and looking for only the super friendly loveable bunnies – they want the one that looks the best.

I think both breeds make great pets – it really comes down to the individual you find and whether you prefer lop ears or velvety fur.

just wondering because i currently have a lop and she is a nut case haha.  and i heard that holland lops tend to be snuggly. but i wondered because the two you see most are rex and lops at pet stores so i didnt know if that had something to say about the personality of the breeds.

I have a holland and he’s not snuggly – he’s cute and fun, but if you try to pet him he usually runs off in a huff. My mini lop is very snuggly.

On the other hand, I’ve known people who have extremely snuggly hollands, so it’s really impossible to predict. I know a woman who has many hollands and she claims they’re the most active buns she’s ever met, while my holland is one of the laziest I’ve met. It’s really all over the place.

I think people generally like hollands and rexes because hollands are adorable and rexes have such wonderful plush fur. I don’t think their personalities are better than many other breeds, but they have instant appeal to most people while other breeds don’t.

My holland lop Squirrel is a little love. He adores pets, bounces around like a crazy dude, makes buzzing noises at me even though he is neutered… yeah. He’s a doll. Even lets me carry him around, unlike SOME wabbits we can mention *coughMonkeycough*

It varies alot between individual rabbits. I’ve seen some rexes at the humane society where i volunteer be love bugs, others are of the No-Touchy variety. Don’t rely on “breed standards”, because well, they aren’t standard
