Ok, so I called Abby’s vet today to ask about the antibiotic, since they were causing her to have runny stools. He said to continue the antibiotic and he gave me a probiotic to give her. My thing is, this antibiotic is made for dogs. I had to ask him if I should give her less since she is smaller and only then did he tell me yes, that I should give her half. I looked at the ingredients and it had stuff like “animal digest” in it. I called to ask him if it was safe for Abby since bunny’s stomachs are very different. His receptionist said they were.

Do you guys have any experience with this stuff? The kind he gave me was Purina FortiFlora for Dogs. What do you guys think? I only ask because I don’t have the upmost confidence in her vet.

I don’t know offhand, but one thing you could try is looking up a rabbit savvy vet (listed under exotics, and also listed on the HRS website) and just ask to speak to the vet. Ask your question saying you are not comfortable with your vet and want a second opinion. If you are reassured, you will feel better. If rhere is a question, then try to find a vet that is more of an expert with rabbits.

I would not give anything with animal digest. I would try to get Benebac or Proviable RB (made especially for rabbits). You do mean probiotic though, not antibiotic…

Benebac is made for dogs as well but can be given for rabbits and does not have animal digest in it.

I also agree with RabbitPam to get another more experienced rabbit vet.

I will call another vet in the morning. I guess I’ll hold off on giving it to her until I talk to them. One of the vets on their list is a vet at the Petsmart Vet office. I didn’t know that the Petsmart vet did rabbits?

Cotton is on baytril and pennG.   HE has probiotic and it helps him a lot.  He eats good.  Without it he starts slacking off on  his food.  His droppings are fine tho.   Just a little darker is all.

Find a rabbit savy vet.  that will work out better for you n your bunny

That’s what they give to my parents dog-I really don’t think it’s an issue-but I have no idea what animal digest is…. the ingredients I read on it were enterrococcus and something else… But you could certainly call the company and ask as well-they may have a 24 hour 800 number, and check with another vet.

I called another vet yesterday and he said that it was not a good idea to give her the FortiFlora. He gave me bene-bac and I feel much better about it. It’s labeled for birds and reptiles but it’s not based on animal ingredients so I’m happy with it. Hands down, this guy is my new vet.

That’s good! Benebac is formulated especially for rabbits but it is the most common one used. Glad you found a new vet too :~)

I wish I saw this post earlier!! We have the Purina Forti-Flora stuff and I was asking about it vs. BeneBac for my new buns antibiotic tummy issues a couple of days ago. Our rabbit vet told me to definately not use the Purina stuff on a rabbit. So I need to get some BeneBac as well

Another one that one of my vets gave me is Proviable RB (Rabbit):

                          http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/vet/products/Proviable-rb.aspx

I’ve been using the Benebac for years though and find it easy to administer in the tube and my rabbits have seemed fine with the taste.

I was hoping to get the Proviable RB, but our supplier doesn’t carry the rabbit one :S Every other kind though. It is so stupid how over looked rabbits are! There is a million pages for avians, and then small mammals get 2 pages.
