I’m looking into switching to either horse stall pellets (wood pellet bedding) or wood stove pellets for litter. For horse stall pellets do you soften them first like you do for when you use them with horses?

Where do you buy your horse stall pellets or wood stove pellets from?

I’m trying to research both of those on the internet and everything is just so confusing

I can only recommend the packaged brand I’ve seen which is Equine Pine, made by the company that produces Feline Pine. Both are OK for bunnies.

When it comes to any wood pellet, you need to watch out for which kind of wood. Pine pellets must never have an accelerant, or ever be used in shaving form. It gives off a chemical that is slowly toxic. In pellet form free of an accelerant, it is safe.

I happen to like Aspen pellets, which cost a lot more but can be found in pet stores in large bags and are also safe as shavings.

The wood stove pellets sold as such must be free for accelerants, but are probably the cheapest of all.

I use horse bedding, it’s called Equine Fresh (wood pellets). It’s around 6 dollars for a large bag. I get it at Tractor Supply. Probably any farm/feed store should have it or some, or any horse care store.

I use to use Equine pine I didn’t like it because I didn’t care for that pine smell. I know everyone says the pine is kiln dried and it wont hurt them. It still made me nervous. I started using yesterdays news for cats and rabbits the unscented pellets. It last me a really long time actually longer than the horse pellets and it is only $15.99 it is a little more but it last a really long time!

I’ve never used Equine Pine, but I don’t notice a smell with Equine Fresh.

And I forgot to answer this question earlier–no, I don’t soften them before using.

I don’t know anything about horse pellets, but I would just like to add that I just switched to yesterdays news (unscented) and I’m really liking it. No dust, no smell, its fairly priced, AND most importantly, its super absorbent and lasting longer than my previous litter. Just to throw another suggestion out there and reconfirmed what kamdynandsunhinesmom said about it

Thank you everyone! Equine Pine is the bedding we use for our horses! Might have to steal some from them. I think I’ll try a couple different types of this stuff and see what works best.
