Hey all, so I live in the Bay Area and was ecstatic when I found out SaveABunny rescue was so close to me. I applied immediately hoping I can help in some way, and they must need volunteers bad because she called me 5 minutes after I applied. But, I was so happy she called because I would love to be a part of helping a bunnys life.

Now, what should I expect when walking in there? I've volunteered at a shelter once before and helped wih the animals but not bunnies. Experience will be much appreciated! ^_^

Hi Kelsey!
I'm originally from the Bay Area but now live in Alaska. I am so happy to hear that you've chosen to help the bunnies. Our site leader, BB, got her beloved Jack, who passed away this year, from this rescue. And when she comes online I am sure she could give you more info than I can (MarkBun volunteers there also I think, but I haven't seen him at the forums for awhile.)
My guess is you'll first be asked to help with maintenance; cleaning pens or sorting toys and maybe food. I'm not sure if they let you do handling right off, but anybunny can always do with a new human friend to say hello to.
Thanks again for helping the bunnies. I'm too far away, so I just make donations when I can.

Thanks for the info! And Alaska wow! Must be very cold huh? Yeah, I love the Bay Area and I am so happy to get involved. I don't make a lot of money though so I don't know if I can give that way. And if it is just maintence for awhile I'm pretty darn good at that seeing I clean after my husband, his family whom we live with, the dog, the cat, and my bunny haah ha. ^_^

And I heard about BB's bunny Jack. I've never expierenced my pet die and I never want too!! Bless her. T^T

I'm late on this post....any update?

I not only adopted Jack from there, but volunteered there for several years. My advice is...be ready to work hard. It's hard work but VERY rewarding. Also, the best thing that can happen to a rescue is a volunteer they can depend on. So no matter what you say you can do, if you can be there once a week, twice a month, whatever it is, be sure to follow thru with what you have committed to or at least give notice if you can't. I think many times the volunteering thing, people may feel since they are giving their time for free they can be more laid back about it, but really, rescues are in such desperate need of help, that if you are someone that follows thru, you are golden to them.

So that means, don't make promises you can't keep because they will need whatever you can give time and effort wise. Be sure to know exactly what you really can do and commit to that. Ironically, though I like to be creative, what I really all I really could commit to for them was just clean cages. Doesn't sound glamourous, but I found it cathartic, and that work is very important to rescues. I want nothing to do with the computer or creativity when I volunteer, as I am mentally maxed out with that kind of work for my own site, so I just don't mind cleaning up poop. (You can pet all the bunnies that way though too--- what's better than petting a gobzillian bunnies in one day!). Plus, there is something wonderful leaving a shelter/rescue spotless when you leave. Very satisfying.

Good Luck and I hope it worked or will work out.

I haven't volunteered there though in many years because I moved from San Francisco to the East Bay, and trying to get through I-80, then across the San Rafael bridge became too time consuming as BinkyBunny grew. I do miss working there though. A vivacious passionate fun group that is highly motivated so you will never be bored... you will learn ALOT!

I was curious too if this worked out for Kelsey?
Oh, BB, I can just imagine that commute! @_@ I've always wondered exactly where SAB was at and how large the facility is?
The best part of helping there is meeting Marcy, I would think. It's always amazed me the communication skills she has with rabbits. ^_^

Hi everyone!

I have been going and you are rright BB it is hard work but I am happy to do it because it is for a great cause! Problem is typically I can't stay long. Something always comes up in my life where I have to leave in 3 hours or less! I feel frustrated about it but besides the long hours I help I'm glad to d o something! : )

Any work at any shelter for any time helps. Sometimes I can only stay for under an hour there but even that helps out.
My bonding quest with Maryann - Read about a less than easy bonding with two buns - but they did bond!
