My three foster buns are at the 2 month mark now and I’ve started noticing a skunky smell every once in awhile. I’m assuming they are territorial poops because the smell fades and I don’t see any spraying of urine.

I want to make sure to return them before they start spraying because their cage does not have normal sides to it and I’m renting this house. So yeah, when do they start spraying? I’m supposed to hold onto them for another month but I can’t have spraying rabbits in the house.

Depends on the rabbit. Mine never sprayed before I got them spayed/neutered (Powder was four years, Stickers six months). If your cage doesn’t protect from that, you could just put a tarp down under the cage that way even if they do spray it won’t touch your floor. And a small accident can easily be cleaned up with nature’s miracle off carpet as well, you won’t ever even know urine touched the carpet unless the same spot gets used days in a row without cleaning. But, I would guess it usually starts around when hormones start 4-6 months.

Some buns never spray, some spray like crazy. 2 months is probably much too early – most males haven’t gone through puberty at that point. I would say 4+ months you could expect some spraying if there were other rabbits around (many single buns never spray, because the spraying is primarily a message to other buns in the area).

Okay, but they start scent-marking their poop earlier then? I don’t mind the poop because the scent fades but I think it’s funny that he’s started doing it

Even speutered adults can scent mark their poop, so that’s normal. My girl is a bit stinky when she’s stressed and in a new area and she’s been spayed for years, so it’s still possible for them to use some sort of scent marking as adults (though she doesn’t actually spray anything, thank goodness)

Indeed, both my buns still scent mark with their droppings, it smells awful but it’s pretty easy to clean up.
