A small back yard breeding operation in Aptos CA has turned into a major rescue for us at The Rabbit Haven.  Animal Control shut down the operation and seized 114 rabbits from the site due to lack of food, water and shelter, incredible filth and sick/injured rabbits not being cared for.  Many of the rabbits that were taken are pregnant females, so we will likely see this number grow if the litters survive.  The rabbits are currently at two area shelters and several Haven triage sites where they are getting adequate food and water (they eat constantly poor things), vet evaluation and care for their injuries and infections.

The story has been picked up by the local media and so far we are weathering the storm.  Once the initial court case is dealt with, the shelter will be able to release more of the rabbits to us.  There is no way they can house this many in the facilities they have, so we are preparing to have to rescue many of these to save their lives.  The rabbits are mostly dwarfs and dwarf mixes, with a few rexes and lops in there also.  Many are missing ears and limbs due to being housed together and fighting over limited resources.

You can read more about this ongoing rescue on our website therabbithaven.org/WatsConfiscation_110711.html

this story breaks my heart ! I dont understand how people don’t feel like they’re doing anything wrong, or not feel bad at all with the living conditions they have to endure…I hope that they all recover soon. ♥

That is heartbreaking. God bless all the great people helping to save and take care of them. I donated some money to help out those poor buns.

Oh gosh. Poor animals. How can people see any animal in pain and not feel sad about it? Like the people who did this to these bunnies. Why can’t they reason that these animals feel and are in pain?

I’m glad they were finally rescued, and I hope they all go to amazing homes! I would take one (or a pair) if I was closer and my parents agreed to it (of course, but their suckers for animals so they probably would let me). But I’m all the way in RI. :/

Ugh. Those poor bunnies. HOW can anyone treat any living thing like that?

I can’t help in placing the poor babies, but I made a donation to try to help with the cost of this rescue. Hope they find home.

So I went to volunteer at one of the shelters today, and it wasn’t too bad! I think the Santa Cruz location, they had 70 of the rabbits and Watsonville had the rest. They did a REALLY good job at cleaning up the buns, cos their coats were pretty clean! They were all absolutely adorable, and surprisingly weren’t too scared to be handled. Some of them seemed a-okay, but a number of buns I saw had ‘meds’ written on their card, some with eye infections, and unfortunately I did groom a poor handsome fella w/ just one ear what’s horrible was that me & some of the volunteers don’t think the ear was lost in a fight or anything because it was a clean job… supposedly that sh!thead did it deliberately! D: it was just awful.

so they’re going to court with this i-dont-know-what-to-call-him-cos-he-can’t-possibly-be-a-person next week, and if he wins, he gets all the rabbits back! D: I certainly hope he doesnt. Here are just a few pictures I took!

this one was a CUTIEEEE! ♥

but those pics are adorable! I wish I was closer so I could help foster/rehome some of them!

This man was also responsible for this atrocity from a previous rescue, again, most likely intentionally inflicted:

Thank you for volunteering your time, mzsunshine.  The rabbits are in decent shape in large part because of volunteers like yourself who donate their time to care for them.  We are running 2 volunteer shifts 7 days a week now to clean, feed and socialize these rabbits at the shelters.  Your hard work is paying off for sure.

How in the hell do ‘people’ who are responsible for animal mutilation manage to get MORE animals??? Would somebody please do me a favor andtuff this unmentionable in a tiny cage for months and cut HIS ears off?!
I had to read the story…go away and cool off and then come back, but nope…still furious. How do we help influence this case? Is there anything we can do to help see this guy get put away, indefinitely? I’m betting he’s liable to start on other human beings next!

Sorry for ranting but this is just unfathomable. I’ve heard too many animal abuse cases lately and my tank is getting topped. Where’s that donation button?

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS AND RESCUERS!!!!!! <3<3<3

A petition can sometimes help, if there is a large national show of support AGAINST a person, a lot of the time the courts will take it into account. care2 runs petitions like this all the time, but someone would have to start one to be delivered to a political power in charge of the case. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t – but getting it on that site would put it in the spotlight and no judge wants to be known as the guy who let an animal mutilator off a SECOND time to abuse more animals.

I can’t believe someone would purposefully cut off the ears of a rabbit what would be the point of that? Just cruel sport? Argh. This guy needs to be given whatever the maximum sentence is for animal abuse!

Edit: I added the news story to the site, if anyone wants to go “note it”, with enough it will make front page and  it might generate more volunteers etc for the shelter. http://www.care2.com/news/member/591094451/3018546

I normally don’t like care2, they’ve been spamming my mailbox since I first got an email account with them years ago and even though I cancelled it I still get spam from them. Not all their causes are agreeable to me…but for these precious bunnies I will definitely make an exception! Thanks, Stickerbunny!

The site itself doesn’t really have a cause – it is user driven for the most part, though I disagree with some of the bloggers they have given space *shrug* they do enough good for animals for me to ignore the stuff I don’t like and use it to get word out for things (like their multi-year campaign against Tiger Truck Stop). Anyone with an account can post a petition, news story, etc so a lot of differing views end up there. Thanks all who have noted it, it’s already working to generate some more donations for these buns.

I have a care2 membership, so I went and “noted” the story.

That breeder should be prosecuted for animal cruelty and never be allowed to have another rabbit.

This is truly horrible to my mind — absolutely sickening.

I have searched the web for the name of this individual, any records or accounts of his previous offenses, and the address of where the current group of rabbits were taken from.  All I have been able to find is the approximate location of his property – Freedom Boulevard and Hidden Oaks in Aptos.

Can anyone provide links to further information on him?  Will the report filed on this incident be made public?  Is there information on his court date?

Any update on the court hearing?

Osprey, I checked the date on your post because it sounded so much like one from last year. Was this guy responsible for hundreds then too?
If he doesn’t pay to feed and care for them, a fine is almost useless since he obviously doesn’t have money in the first place. He needs to be stopped.

They are so gorgeous! Any chance of shipping them out in half dozen groups or more to rescues around the country for adoption? (whatever happened to the caravan drivers that would transport cages of bunnies across states to rehome them?)

I don’t have any more information about the hearing, but from what Auntie Heather told me, it is extremely unlikely that he will be allowed to get these rabbits back.  I am pretty sure we are palnning to take as many as we can, because once these are transferred to the county shelter officially, they can start euthanizing them.  I’ll keep you all posted.

Went to the shelter today, and I have goodies for all of you! (WARNING: Pic & cuteness heavy)

Good news, there were noticably less bunnies today than there were last week, which means more of them went to loving foster homes!

she was my favorite bunbun of the day, so sweet and affectionate. She loved being petted and held! I’d take her home if I could, or even foster, but I don’t have the space, and I know I woudln’t want to let her go

okay just 2 more of her…

                                                    what a cutiee

isn’t he handsome? I’ve never seen a gold(?) rex/rex-mix (??) before… He was being good and ate his greens.

cutie white nethie from last week, I think he remembered me!

thisdapper fellow may be missing an ear, but don’t let his looks fool you, all the lady volunteers were fawning over this one.

simply adorable. liked to poke his nose out of the cage for eskimo kisses!

zZzz… food coma after all those greens!!

another good looking fella, it was my lucky day I must say , being surrounded by such charming bucks

                                                      a group of friends & a velvety rex-mix?

this one was named Joey. I remembered him because he flopped multiple times when I let him out to play! Did wonders for my ego  the 2nd pic is Joey in action w/ that hay stuffed roll.

this one was quite the little lady, look at her paws, so proper!

                                                     Why hello!

2 out of a trio, this one in the front looks surprised all the time! Her name should’ve been surprise.

That’s all for now! Hope you enjoyed them!

I got some more information today.  The breeder is now out of the picture, there is a criminal case pending against him, but the rabbits are out of his life for good.  The Haven has informed the shelter that it is our intention to find rescue for all of these rabbits.  So far, we have gotten 38 out into new foster sites and to other rescues.  Several litters have been born, and most of the babies didn’t make it due to the conditions they came from.  Dr. Hillary Stern from Avian and Exotic Vet Clinic in Monterey came in on her own time to spend two hours doing initial evaluations on all of the rabbits housed at the Santa Cruz shelter.  Several had serious wounds that required surgery and were taken out of the shelter immediately into medical foster care.  We have gotten a bunch of them spayed and neutered, and are available for adoption now.  Volunteers are working two shifts a day to clean cages, refill hay and water, clean and cuddle these bunnies.  We are working with the shelter to get as many out as we can to free up space there.  I think a few of them will be at our adoption show this weekend, if I get any photos I will post them.

We are still in need of foster sites and volunteers for these rabbits.  If any of you are in the Bay Area and can help, please don;t hesitate to contact Heather at director@therabbithaven.org.  I posted an update with more information on The Haven’s website if you want to learn more.  Thanks for your interest in this situation.  So far we are weathering the storm, and the response has been great from new fosters, donors and are vets.  Soon, we will be able to concentrate on finding homes for these rabbits.

osprey, that is good news about that terrible breeder. I am sorry you lost so many babies to their poor conditions, but it’s wonderful how many you are all able to nurse and save. Hang in there.

I just posted anoterh update.  To date, 41 have been removed from the two shelters.  We were given until December 17 to get the rest out, or they will begin euthanizing them.  Needless to say, 67 rabbits in just a few weeks is a big project for us.  Volunteers continue to go to the shelter every day to feed, clean, medicate and socialize the bunnies.  They have come a long way in the few short weeks since this all began.  If you click on the Rabbit haven story link, you can see some of the volunteers in action.  One of the bunnies, a little rex with himalayan type markings named Alamea was at our adoption show this weekend, and I got a new photo of her, which I will share below.  I’ll keep everyone updated as this situation progresses.

These bunnies were also given a great gift by three area vets and some vet techs and staff at local vet hospitals.  Dr. Hillary Stern (Avian and Exotic in Monterey), Dr. Erika Sullenberger (Animal Hospital of Soquel), Dr. Sarah Hawklyn (Aptos-Creekside Pet Hospital), and vet techs and staff from Felton Veterinary Hospital, Animal Hospital of Soquel, and Aptos-Creekside Pet Hospital will be holding a free “Spay A Thon” this Sunday at the Santa Cruz shelters.  All of these animal care professionals will be donating their time to get as many spays and neuters done as possible.  The Rabbit Haven will be providing volunteers to move the rabbits in and out of the ORs, and to proviide post op care for the bunnies.

A bunch more of the bunnies were taken into rescue over the last few days.  Amazing as it may sound, We are down to 23 now needing rescue.  The rescue community in the Bay Area has really responded to our please for helping, taking large numbers of these bunnies out of the shelter and into rescue.  Several were also adopted over the weekend.  I am hoping that one more push will be able to get the remaining bunnies out and safely into rescue.  I will keep everyone posted.

Olaf was a little ‘out of it’ for the first night – too much excitement and travel – but now he’s coming out of his shell and is having a good time. He actually scares me a little because he looks a little like a gray alien and I have an irrational fear of them. Doesn’t stop me from giving him pets.

Rhoury is a little more skittish but still doing well. And I believe a third came that was un-named whom we now call Pan. He’s a terrified little guy but when we put him into a large X-pen to stretch his legs, boy did he have a great time!

All are doing well and coming along fine.

Three rabbits remain at the Santa Cruz shelter from this rescue.  We have an adoption show on Saturday 12/17, and all three will be shown.  If they are not adopted, they will go into foster care with The Haven.  One way or the other, they are not going back to the shelter on Saturday.

Two of the rabbits with the ear amputations have had surgeries to remove large abcesses under their wounds.  They will take a bit longer to be ready for adoption, losing an ear is a very traumatic thing for a rabbit.

The response to this crisis has been really overwhelming.  We have had rabbits going all over California, with offers of rescue from as far away as Canada.  Bunny people truly are amazing.

The last three rabbits from the confiscation are out of the shelter and in foster care with The Haven.  Out of the 116 or so rabbits (I am not sure of the exact number), we only lost one, a very sick female who died the night she was taken into the shelter.  None were euthanized.  They are all safe now, in adoptive and foster homes all around California.

This was a massive undertaking, and The Haven got a lot of help from the community and other rescues. I saw Heather on Saturday, she is exhausted but happy that we could get them all out.  The volunteers who groomed and socialized the bunnies at the shelters, the members of the community that donated supplies and cash, the vets and vet techs who donated their time to treat and spay/neuter these rabbits, the people who did twitter, facebook, blog and media postings, the volunteers who did huge numbers of loads of soiled rabbit laundry, the list goes on and on, so many people supported these bunnies.  It was amazing to see.

A number of these rabbits were featured at our adoption show on Saturday.  Three found new homes, many more were there just to get their nails done, their photos taken, and then go to their new foster homes.  I took over 400 photos of 19 rabbits on Saturay, a new personal best.  The rabbits are adorable, they are all tiny, with the classic round heads and tiny ears of dwarf bunnies.  Some of them are rexes, some have dutch markings, some are all white with blue or brown eyes.  They are still very skinny, even after almost 6 weeks of decent food.  All are spayed/neutered now, and ready for some TLC and then adoption into their own homes.

The BB community has been very supportive during this rescue, your encouragement and donations helped to keep us moving forward and find ways to help the bunnies.  Thank you all for your continued interest and support.  It really means a lot to me.
