Stickers started sneezing recently – I know that can be a symptom of URI, but she has no discharge from eyes or nose, nor is she acting at all lethargic (in fact, she just did a zoomy run around in circles binky session). She’s eating fine, drinking fine, etc. What else can cause sneezing? I intend to have her checked out soon (it’s the weekend, so can’t do it now) but want to know what symptoms I should be looking out for / what else might be causing it. Can rabbits get allergies? She does it the most when she snuffs the carpet looking for food (she found some millet by the bird cage once and now sniffs around it every time she gets out to see if I will forget to clean up, which I don’t).

My bun had problems with sneezing when I first got her; I talked to the vet about it, and she said it can be caused by dust or other particles that fly around from the heater being turned on. Maybe there is something about the carpet that is bothering her; try vacuuming or shampooing it? If there isn’t discharge and she is acting fine, there is probably no reason to worry. Also, the vet told me that sometimes rabbits can have had a URI previously that has damaged the turbinates in their nose, causing them to have permanent issues with sneezing/snuffling. Hope this helps!

What kind of sneezing is it? Is it a rapid sneeze with head movement (maybe to one side). Basically rapid movement like a human sneeze? Or is it a gentle and low “pfff”. First one might be something in his nose, like dust particles from the hay or carpet and the second one might be him just relaxing.

A relaxing “sneeze” isn’t loud and usually they will stop breathing for a sec or two. But one can confuse it because when they do that they empty there lungs much faster then a human would if you would preform the same thing.

Just one little small, short sneeze every couple of hours. She didn’t sneeze yesterday, but she did on Friday / Saturday several times. I’m still monitoring her, but she seems to be over whatever was making her sneeze.

Thanks, emk – I vacuum all the time (the bird drops seed on the ground, so I have to vacuum it up so they don’t eat it) so wouldn’t think there is anything in the carpet bugging her, except maybe their own fur. lol But, we did just start running the heater for the first time since having her.

Certainly previous damage can cause issues later, but I’d keep an eye in case it is a acute illness rather than a chronic one. Did your vet advise you as to what you should watch for to distinguish?
