(and first of all thanks to everyone who answered my first question on this site! I work full time and go to school full time, and care for olive, so sometimes i get busy and forget to respond.. sorry! if you did read my last post I limited pelets and switched to orchard grass, he’s doing great)

I bought Olive last march from a pet store (shame on me i know!) but the shelter closest to me only adopts out bunnys in twos , and the set i loved was only 8 weeks old, i knew i’d need to seperate then fix both.. something i couldn’t really afford to do(2 cages, 2 surgeries, bonding time..) plus what if they didnt end up bonding post surgery? it seemed like a hassle. so to the pet store i went.
as if you didn’t know most people who work in pet store know NOTHING about rabbits haha. the fish tank they were in (terrible) had about 10 bunnies. the glass said “Netherland dwarfs-40, Regular-30” I don’t know what a “regualr” rabbit is in their opinion but i instantly fell inlove with olive. i went to buy him and the lady rang me up for a dwarf. He looked nothing like one (ears too big, body shape was wrong and he was already kinda big.) and after arguing with her for 20 minutes the lady finally said she would give me him for 30.. but he was a dwarf. riiighht…. fast foreward to now 8 months later and he’s almost 8 poundsand i don’t think hes done growing… and so adorable.. the vet he went to for neutering simply said “i don’t know”… great right? (i’m looking for a new vet)

        what do you guys think?

he’s so shiny and feels like silk, not velvety like a rex but silky. and his eyes are brown, my flash just makes them red

not the best pictures i know but he never stops moving! haha

What is he? besides adorable.. because i already knew that

He’s high on the Handsome Scale, that’s for sure.
Definitely an Uppy Eared Bunny (I am partial to them-sorry lop lovers) and my Samantha has a silky coat too. At 8 months he could be almost full grown, so his head shape and body shape are the biggest clues after the feel of his coat. I am stumped after that, because in a Pet shop you will always get a mixed breed. That’s why a breeder will take them there, since they don’t meet any breeding standards for show or special sale. So he’s probably a combined breed. Regular is not a bad description actually.

Keep those pix coming, and someone here will be able to make a more educated guess. I am more able to say what he’s Not, than what he is. He IS lucky you got him.

Thanks, the pictures really don’t do him justice at all.. yeah i assume he’s a mix, i know it doesn’t really matter i just wonder

Oh i just remembered the shelter i took him to get his nails clipped at said he was a “satin” never heard of that before

He’s beautiful — that’s for sure.  And don’t feel bad about where you got him.  The important thing is it is obvious that you love him and he will be well taken care of.  That does quite a bit for rescue work as that is one less rabbit that will be turned over to a shelter.  You seem to understand what it all entails and he is very lucky to have you.   As far the breed — you are right — not a dwarf!! Haha.   I could see him being a Satin or a black New Zealand.  Both grow on average to be between 9 – 12 pounds.   Love those big bunnies with those big ‘ol ears!

Well I can’t help on the breed…he really looks like a black version of my beautiful, mystery pet store bun, Olivia, although he has bigger ears. Which is really funny because of their names.  Same body type, long nose and silky fur. Olivia is wondering if he has a girlfriend?

I was definitely thinking New Zealand Black.

                  EDIT:

Here is a picture I found of a few NZB

I just came across your comment about the shelter calling him Satin. A lot of shelters just give bunnies breed names and never really look into what they really are. I clearly saw a lionhead at my shelter and they called it a long haired. They have an insane amount of “satins” in an insane amount of colors and just as many “shorthairs” in just as many varieties. One thing they did get right was the difference between a new zealand white and an albino rex. They arent the most bun breed savvy ppl, but at least they are saved and well taken care of buns.  But he very likely is a mix with NZB

I was actually looking at pictures of Satins and NZB and I noticed something… your rabbits ears match mine!  they are big!  I have looked at the satins ears and they dont look as big as my New Zealand and your bun.  My bun’s ears are like satelites haha.  She is a New Zealand White… I will show you…

His face and ears remind me of a New Zealand or a NZ mix. Very cute guy!

I would say a mix between a mini rex and a New Zealand and maybe even a little Flemish Giant
