So I am on the mailing list for a local restaurant that I like quite a bit and patronize quite often.  Well I got an email this evening saying that they will be hosting a “breakfast with Santa” complete with harp music, storytelling, and baby bunnies.  Now I have no idea what the presence of the baby bunnies will entail, and I can think of ways it could be done that would be LESS bad (eg, the kids can’t handle them at all), but I can think of nothing particularly likely that would be good. So I’m plotting a letter to express my concern.  What would you all include in the letter?

What?! They couldn’t get any puppies?! (Only slightly joking here)

Maybe you should check with the health department to see if having any animals there will be violating codes. Then you can write THAT in your letter as I would assume it will.

I would definitely include information from sources like rabbit.org, etc which will show how and WHY rabbits are not for “entertainment purposes”.

That’s a good idea about any health code issues and I’ll definitely check that out. Though knowing the place, I suspect they’ve checked it out already and are doing something to stay clear. Like keeping the poor little buns outside in the cold or something. Sigh. And here I thought I only had to worry about this sort of thing at Easter!

And I just found out the bunnies are definitely there to be pet.

Writing a letter can be very powerful. Make sure you are very polite and mention that you are a regular customer. State why you are concerned and make mention of your experience with rabbits. I would recommend alternatives, like perhaps they could pass out small plush gifts to the kids. You can buy bulk plush animals really cheap online.

When writing letters of this kind, I much prefer snail mail to e-mail. I think they are taken more seriously because you have taken the time to write a letter and put in the mail rather than a quick e-mail.

My main concern about an event like this is “What happens to the bunnies after?” It’s bad enough that bunnies are exploited at Easter, now they have to deal with Christmas too?

I would call and talk to the manager – put him/her on the spot. When you write a letter you give them the opportunity to craft a response whereas a direct conversation, they cannot do that.

Baby bunnies are kinda random, makes me wonder if someone in the family had an accidental litter. If they don’t decide to change the plan, you could ask if they’ll let you set out pamphlets with real rabbit care.
I might make one, actually. I’ve got a photo assignment coming up about causes we’re passionate about.

Baby bunnies seemed pretty random to me too! I’m actually planning to email, write, and call them. Possibly attack their facebook page too if I can’t get results. On that note, I’ve put together a facebook note encouraging my friends to write them and explaining why it’s important, so if anyone is in the Champaign-Urbana area and wants to join me and the winged monkeys in talking them out of this, message me and I’ll direct you to my facebook page.

Also, I hope you do make a pamphlet, professional looking materials can really make a huge difference in getting people to take you seriously. Especially on causes that people tend to denigrate as for hippies and cat/bunny lady types.

Haha you’re totally right. I’m going to start a thread to get some collaboration on this
