It’s been a while since I posted, but Sweep has been fine and growing up quickly but staying completely adorable!

It’s getting cooler here, as with most places in the northern hemisphere, and I think she may have caught a bit of a cold. She’s still quite energetic and bounces and binkies around the place, but I’ve caught her with dried snot on her nose and her breathing sounds a little bit stuffed. She’s always been prone to sneezing, but tonight her sneezes sounded quite wet. And while I haven’t caught any running nose or huge snot balls around the place (she looks like she eats her snot as she sneezes), I can’t quite tell if I should get her checked out.

        Any help?

        Thank you!

Rabbits do not get colds (weird right?). I would take her to a vet, respiratory issues are serious in a rabbit and they often can hide that they are sicker than they seem.

I took her back to the pet store – which also gives medical treatment, but obviously nothing too intensive, just shots and the like – and they took a look in her nose and said there was nothing to be worried about, that she was fine. She still sounds wheezy and blocked, but they told me that there wasn’t anything wrong. They suggested I switch her to Timothy hay now that she’s gotten older, and seemed to suggest that it was cleaner somehow and wouldn’t make her sneeze as much.

            Ideas?

It could be environmental. I doubt she eats her snot as she sneezes.

If you can find a more experienced vet it would be a good idea to get their opinion.

Oh yes, allergies in rabbits are very common. Switching to timothy hay is a good thing to do at this age anyways, it might help if the other is what’s bothering her. A rabbit savvy vet will really help!

I think I would see a qualified rabbit vet. If she sounds weezy and blocked-that’s not fine Keep us posted!

Well, in another bout of paranoia I went to the pet store again after spying some snot, but they reassured me again and checked her tummy and teeth just to be safe. I still haven’t heard back from the only international-standard vet with rabbit specialisation, but in the meantime they gave me some drops that I can put in her nose to get the gunk out. They said I should do it 2-3 times a day and it should clear up after a while. I’m totally scared of doing it but she’ll be better for it.
