I noticed just now that has blood coming out of Totoro’s tear duct. There’s a normal “eye crust” (sorry don’t know how else to describe it) but there’s definitely blood. Does anyone know what could be causing this? It’s not normal is it? I’ve noticed that around both of his eyes it has been a little red. Here’s a picture, you can’t see it very well though because I didn’t want to use flash:

If there is blood coming out of it, call the vet. It isn’t normal.

It’s off hours for my vet, should I call an emergency vet?

I would at least call and get their opinion on if it’s important enough to rush into the emergency vet for. Bleeding from the eyes like that is not normal at all and a bit worrying. Especially since I can’t see any scratches around the area like if he accidentally cut himself, so the blood is coming from an unknown source near the eye. I googled it and in humans blood in the tear duct usually means a ruptured blood vessel in the eye and the treatment is eye drops, no idea if it would be the same for rabbits.

I called an emergency vet that was on my regular vet’s site, they think it could be a scratch or red eye (?) but that I should wait and make an appointment with my regular vet tomorrow morning unless his behavior changes. It’s not consistently coming out, the blood is just there from what I can tell.

I know yesterday, you said “tomorrow” you’ll call the vet, and I’m not sure where you are “time” wise, but if “tomorrow = Sunday”, did you really mean tomorrow? Is your vet open on Sundays? I know I do have access to a vet 7 days a week if I go to VCA animal Hospital here, but I know that is not the case for everyone.

Regardless though, let us know how today went and how your bunny is doing.

I posted this on Friday night in Wisconsin. His eye looks better but I have an appointment for Monday.

After taking Totoro in the vet cleaned his eye out and found a tiny cut, I suspect this is from his metal hay rack and so I took it away. Very glad it wasn’t anything worse but I feel bad for allowing him access to something that could hurt him ): The vet gave me a little bit of *rather expensive* antibiotic cream to keep the area from getting infected. Here’s to hoping there will be no need for vet visits in the near future.

Sends “its only a minor scratch” vibes! I’m glad he’s ok

ooo yes, I know first hand how expensive eye medicine can be for the bunnies! Good thing it was something minor though!
