Hazel’s spay went wonderfully! I got to be there the whole time, and helped her wake up in recovery. I took some pictures of it for those who are curious. She is home after spending a night at the veterinary hospital, and she is doing great! Eating and pooping like normal and taking her Metacam like a champ. Right now she is getting some good rest in her cage. If anyone has any questions about what goes on during a spay or what it’s like to watch, please feel free to ask; as a vet student I get all of the behind-the-scenes stuff!

Thats great that the spay went well! Wilbur got spayed today too, not eating or pooping much yet unlike your bun ): Very interesting to see. About how long does it take for the actual spay? Was it scary or sad to watch? Oh also, idk if you can answer this or not but my vet put a wrap around one of Wilbur’s front paws where she had the IV, when should I take it off?

                    bunnyfriend –

The spay took about an hour to an hour and a half; it was fun to watch! I was nervous beforehand, but once the surgery got going and I could hear her little heartbeat on the monitor I felt just fine. She had really good care at the veterinary school with an experienced exotics vet. She explained everything to all of us watching (students can come and go as they please in most surgeries). It was a relief for her to be off the table and in recovery though! Poor little confused bun.

As to the wrap on Wilbur’s leg, you can probably take that off now if it’s been a few hours since she got home. Did the vet not keep her overnight? If she doesn’t start eating soon you should call them; they can give you some Oxbow Critical Care food to mix with pumpkin or sweet potato puree to feed her from a syringe. That’s what they had to do for my bun the first night since she wouldn’t eat on her own.

emkvet: Oh wow I thought it would be much quicker. Thank you so much for your advice [I litterally had just made a thread about her eating before I saw this], I’ll call the vet now. Do they normally keep bunnies overnight?

Yes they usually do for spays, just to make sure they’re eating and pooping properly. Good luck with Wilbur, let me know how it goes and if you have any more questions.
