Hi everyone, so you know the issue by now (unspayed doe peeing/pooping everywhere outside of her cage, soon to be spayed). When I catch her urinating on the carpet I say “Hazel, no” and then pick her up and put her in her box. However, when I have been doing this lately she has started trying to run from me, and when I pick her up she flails around and actslike the world is ending. Then she shuns me for a while afterward. I think she’s doing this whole thing because she knows she’s in trouble and knows that I’ll put her in her litterbox. Is there something else I should be doing or not doing? I don’t want to scare her by picking her up (although we never had issues before her pee problem became constant), but she also needs to know that peeing on the carpet isn’t ok.

If the problem is hormonal, then you can’t really do anything about it until she is spayed. Have you restricted her to a smaller area yet?

Of course she tries to run away. The words “No, Hazel” have become a predictor of punishment – of putting her back in the cage. Nevermind that most bunnies don’t enjoy being picked up. Punishment has been proven not to be effective in modifying behaviour – and especially not without a price tag. You should be positively reinforcing her for using the litterbox, and thoroughly cleaning any accidents (with vinegar for smell). Start off hiding a few treats in the litterbox – this will encourage her to return there more often.

Otherwise, things will probably get better after her spay as long as you keep her confined to a smaller area at the moment to avoid accidents. My male lost his litterbox habits shortly before his neuter, too. Soon after he was a perfect gentleman again.
