I share an apartment and before I adopted my bun, I told my roomie before that I have been looking for a bunny and wondered if she was ok with it.  She said so long as it doesnt smell.  Just to be sure that she doesnt stink up the apartment, are there any natural air freshners that are rabbit safe to use?  Or any special tips to keep the bunny area smelling good?

Thanks everybody for all the help you have been giving me in all my previous posts… you all are a great help!!

Petco.com has Fresh’n’Clean solid deodorizer that you uncap and set on a bookshelf to make the place smell nice.

If you’re on a shoestring budget like I am, you can set out a small dish of vinegar to kill odors.

A litter with odor control made the biggest difference in smell for me and my buns.

best way to keep control of smells is to keep your bunny’s habitat clean, and change the litter frequently, before it starts smelling.

It was your tip to use vinegar in a dish to control odors, Monkeybun and that is valid too. A good odor-controlling litter is Carefresh but there are others as well.

You might want to try shredding a phone book into litter-sized pieces and then wean her off that, onto carefresh or another good odor-controlling litter.

Keeping the bunny litterbox clean is definitely key as that is where the smell will come from since bunny’s themselves don’t smell.

I like to use rosemary.  We have a large bush in our front and back yard, and I use cuttings from that and put them in a basket. They last for a few days before they begin to dry out.  But during those few days, I just can tear apart the cuttings and it offers a fresh scent.

I also put Basil and mint — just cut some off that up and wow….smells good.

You could also use baking soda in a container up and away from where your bunny can get to it.   You can use the ones that are meant to go in the fridge — the side of the box opens up and there is sort of a cloth material that allows more air flow.  I’m sure you could create someting similar.

I used to use natural sachets, filled with things that weren’t irritating to a bunny (citrus can be irritating), but Rose, Lavender, rosemary, hibiscus and I would hang it near a fan or on the door knob.

I’ve also heard of the a dish of vinegar and water mix working well. Though I haven’t tried that.  A member a while back used a bowl of charcoal and that seemed to work well for her.

Out of everything though,  a fan and keeping a window cracked for air flow is the best for keeping the “urine” amonia smell out.  I am lucky though because the weather where I live permits that all year round, and our alarm system works even when the window is cracked a few inches (it’s based on movement of the window). So I can keep it cracked wide enough get enough air flow without compromising security either.

But if there are days when things have to be closed up, i just make sure to scoop up the urine in the morning and again in the evening.  You don’t have to clean the whole box or anything — just scoop up the urine soaked litter, and put a new scoop of litter in.  No biggie to do but it can make a big difference scent wise.

The biggest thing I notice is urine. The best way to keep that at bay is to scrub out the litter box with vinegar to prevent ammonia build up and what not. What kind of litter are you using? I scoop the box anywhere from 2-4 times a day, not exactly out of necessity but the litter box is in my room. Fortunately bunnies themselves actually smell good? It sounds weird but that’s what I’ve noticed! Haha I don’t know if anyone else has too?

I keep a parrot and chemical air fresheners are bad for them – a few things you can do

Boil orange peels, cinnaon and water on the stove. It will spread the citrus / cinnamon smell and smells yummy!

Peel cinnamon, add it to dried lavender and rosemary and place in a potpurri bag and hang it somewhere out of bunny reach.

Make rose water from natural rose petals and spritz it on some fabrics around the house (curtains, etc) out of bunnies reach. The smell will ling like perfume (my cousin used to make herself a perfume out of water and rose petals, smells great!).

Thanks for all of your advice!! I used to have my own basil plant, but it died in the AZ heat

I know what you mean StickerBunny, I have a parrot at my parents house so I have to be extra careful when I am cleaning.

                        BunnyFriend, I use pre-recycled litter.

I am a new bunny owner, well pet wise, I also noticed herbs help a lot. They also double as a snack. I have rosemary, basil, oregano, savory, mint and so on. I alternate to mix things up. Yes my life is that exciting. <3 aside from that I clean often. good luck to you.

I just toss out the litter daily or every 2nd day. I don’t put a ton in there to begin with, just 1 bowl full, so it’s not super wasteful and it keeps my house smelling nice

I feel like the type of litter used is best in odor control. Before I used CareFresh cos it was marketed as good odor control, but I still noticed a slight urine smell in the air. I switched to wood pellets and I hardly notice the smell at all! Sometimes there’s a small woody smell, but anything beats bunny pee. They’re cute fuzzies, but their pee smeellllsss. >.<
