When I bought my 2 lovebugs home, the lady sent me home w/ a mini pamphlet on how to care for the two littie fluffies. One of the things she said was

“Maybe for a treat and will keep their system clean give a lime slice once a week”

I checked BB for anything about limes, but the only thing I was able to find was about the lime spray, so I’m a little apprehensive about giving the wedge the the babies.

        It also said…

“DO NOT FEED LETUCE or other greens. they can cause gas and rabbits cannot pass gas and this can cause severe stomach problems and even death of your bunny”

I’ve read a lot of  contradicting things online, whether or not to feed greens! But I do see here on the forum that a majority of you guys feed your buns greens without any problems!

How much of this is true!? And how much of it is garbage??

I’m not sure about limes, but rabbits are naturally clean animals.

That information is wrong about lettuce – the one lettuce you do not want to feed is iceberg. It has barely any nutrients in it.

My rabbit gets romaine daily, along with herbs. You can give green and red leaf as well. I would just start with a small piece, as some rabbits may have sensitive tummies!

I’m not sure how much stock I’d put in that info. Check out the BB Info at the top of the page and Rabbit.org for every topic under the sun.

Greens are a large part of their diet. But you need to feed the right ones. The Info page has a list of rabbit safe veggies.

I cannot even think my rabbits would want to eat a lime…they’d turn their nose up at it.

I agree with Beka, that information is not the best and there are better resources that she pointed out.

Max might have one… only if it had a Corona wrapped around it… (lol, JK!!!)  That’s actually my husband!

Here’s a very informative article that explains the hows and whys of diet:  http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/diet.html

If you got your bunnies from a breeder, then that’s not uncommon advice. But as you said, many of us feed greens with little issue.

Maybe for a treat and will keep their system clean give a lime slice once a week

By “system” I think this may mean urinary system. I have heard that giving citrus when pee is to chalky or has crystals. Not sure if it actually helps or not. All mine turn their noses up to citrus anyway.

ETA: On the greens thing, it is not a bad idea to only introduce them in the diet when older then 12wks. Some say 6months…  If they didn’t have greens as babies and you plan to give them at some point, just introduce it slowly into their diet.  As to bunnies not being able to pass gas – I don’t think that’s correct.    Sure they can get gas but pretty sure they can pass it.

I’ve read that citrus oil is a good chew deterrent (certainly works with my pair) so I can’t imagine a bunny actually eating lime by choice. Strange advice!

I think it’s fairly common for breeders to be anti-veggies, but since the current research being shared by good rabbit vets is to feed veggies, I’m going with the vets over the breeders who only have personal anecdotes.

Yup, Ladys breeder said no lettuce too, there was another person there looking at bunnies and she was like, “I thought you told me they couldn’t have lettuce?” So then the breeder and I were arguing about greens haha. I told the other lady about this website and the rabbit.org one, hopefully she did some research. I doubt it though, the Flemish she bought was their 6th bun, and she was telling me she didn’t litter train any of them because when she put a box in it was dug out and made a mess (I was like ,well yeah, bunnies dig but they make grates that can help that). And none of her buns are bonded, they are all in separate (and I’m assuming, too-small) cages. Ugh. Anyway, moral of the story is people either don’t care that a bunny isn’t meant to be a cage pet or they don’t take the time to educate themselves.

LOL some of your guys’ replies are hilarious!

Yeah I am definitely questioning the credibility of her advice which is why I brought it up on BB. Cos it was always to my knowledge that buns enjoy greens, and a lime wedge definitely does not sound appetizing to me at all >.< ! I'm sure Buster & Lola will be happy to get some variety in their diet!

and Sarita, I was always registered as MzSunshine, however when I first signed up, I mistakenly set it up so my posts would show up as Teresa N.
