Pretty much as it says in the subject line… I know that you’re not meant to clean a cage too thoroughly, so that bunny’s smell is still there for them to recognize, but Sweep’s hay has been piling up beneath the cage wires and it looks a little messy but I’m not sure if it’s unhealthy. How often should I clean her cage and/or litter box?

        Thanks!

Baby bunnies are very messy, so you will be cleaning your bunny’s cage more often. Rabbits have a good sense of smell, so you don’t need to leave too much behind. I personally like to at least tidy up daily. Others may do it every few days or less. Again it depends on the bunny AND the space they have as you don’t want them confined to a soiled cage as that would be unhealthy.

As far as the litterbox, what do you use for litter? IF you use only hay, then I would change that daily as soiled hay can grow mold after a few days. If you don’t want to have “smelly” cage, you can definitely clean up the cage and litterbox daily if you want, but just keep a little urine soaked litter in there along with some poos that will be enough. Again, rabbits have a good sense of smell, so they don’t need alot to recognize urine and poo.

I use pellet-style litter that soaks up urine and keeps everything pretty smell-free, thank goodness! I’ll try to clean underneath of hay every other day or so, then. Just wasn’t sure. Thank you!

I’m glad someone brought this up, because for my three adult bunnies, I wind up doing a complete clean twice a day and often ‘spot clean’ as I go by them all day. I was recently dropping using even mild cleansers for fear that Mimzy was irritated by them. Still, as clean as I keep it, he pees/poops on the floor and has some kind of skin condition. I fear I may still be cleaning too much? Can a rabbit’s area be TOO clean?

Well, I clean twice a day. I vacuum any stray poops, fur, hay. I change water bowls twice a day. I change litter boxes twice a week.

I do have older rabbits and they are a bit messier as well (not all of them but half of them). I don’t think you could keep a rabbits area too clean if you tried.

I usually clean the messy rabbit’s carpets once a week – they are the kind I can throw in the washer and air dry. I would do it more often to be honest if I had the time.

I have 2 bunnies they are both almost 5 years old. I clean my females cage once a week and scoop her soiled litter out everyday and dump it completely twice a week. I disinfect it once a week. The cleaning that I do everyweek involves. She lives in an exercise pen with the mat that came with it i take that off and spray vinegar and water on it and wash it and let it dry. I clean her bowls and litterbox and toys. Now my male rabbit is disabled so his cage gets cleaned every single day. Hay does become messy in a cage.
