I am hoping we may have at least one of Mimzy’s problems taken care of. But every time I post a possible resolution, we have a relapse, so fingers crossed this time!

His biopsy area is healing pretty well, the fur is coming back in odd fits and starts and a lot of it is still bare, but as a result I’ve been slathering it with bag balm every day. It’s kept the skin nice and soft. There also appears to be no further irritations. The dry patches are also receding.

On a whim, I began putting the balm on the tips of his ears, where the almost cuticle like tears have been for over a year now. I felt them this morning and the rough edges have all but completely disappeared.

I am at a loss to explain it. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars in testing, put him through all sorts of heck to find out what this is. And the simplest thing…a $9 tin of bag balm. I haven’t even dented the salve significantly and the rough skin is almost healed.

Now, I think he is suffering from an all over dry skin condition, he still has a few rough spots on the ears where they join his head, but I haven’t put anything on those yet. Plus I have all but eliminated chemicals of any kind (vinegar and water, Nature’s Miracle, Swiffer cloths) from the cleaning of his hutch. He is beginning to lie down for his naps with his head back on the floor of the pen again. He hasn’t flopped, but he’s getting close. I am still wondering if the pen is causing some of his skin problems. Or whatever I clean it with, more specifically. It always seems rinsed thoroughly to me, but hey, my eyes aren’t what they used to be. Neither is my nose.

But for now, at least he isn’t kicking his face and ears like he was. The tips must really have been bothering him. And except for the need for Carefresh in his litter box/overnight in his pen, he has almost no dust causing material in there, so even his nose seems a bit better.

I haven’t had to give him much benadryl or metacam in the last week or so. Just keeping up on the bag balm. And prayers. I have to take him back in pretty soon to have the stitch removed from his biopsy site, but hubby is pretty good at doing stuff like that, so maybe we can handle it at home. (We did this for our dogs all the time, since it was so hard to take the big bruisers back to the vet in our tiny cars.) I think my vet had some kind of family emergency this last weekend, because I couldn’t speak to her on Saturday, but she’s supposed to be back in at the end of this week.

How wonderful it will be if I can tell her Mimzy is better! How silly we are both going to feel if it was just a skin allergy or low humidity!

As always, we want to thank everyone here who’s been thinking of him and sending healing vibes. BB Vibes are the best!

kamdynandsunshinesmom, here is MimzMum’s post about the biopsy, I figured it’d be easier than having her rewrite everything

Another update: I got to speak to Mimzy’s vet today, and she confirmed that the biopsy showed nothing more than irritation and immune response within normal levels. So he doesn’t have sebaceous adenitis, as I was worried he did.
She does think that perhaps the TMS aggravated whatever allergic condition he already has, even though the reaction seems to be ongoing for the last month or so. We both agreed he doesn’t need to be put under again to investigate the odd mass he has near his heart (see my other post regarding his hearing for that story) as we both believe it’s probably just a lymph node swollen due to the immune response. The stress of a visit and GA/biopsy would be more than he needs right now.
Sooo…all told, he probably has allergies. I told her the bag balm was working on his ears, so she hasn’t prescribed anything further. We’ll keep going as we are, she says the hot water treatment of his habitat and other areas he frequents should be sufficient to keep him clean.
*forehead slap* I forgot to ask about his incontinence again. >.< Doh!

He has had a few down days, but these seem to correspond to when I do use cleansers on his litter box. (even if it’s just vinegar and water) He is apparently just an extremely sensitive animal who flares up with symptoms due to even small changes in his environment.

Oddly, even if I take him out in the car in subzero weather, he doesn’t sneeze…the minute he’s back in the house his nose will start running. So it has to be something in here. And considering how filthy my house gets despite whatever cleaning I do, I am really not surprised. We only got one window replaced this year and it wasn’t the one that was the dirtiest (wooden framing that is chock full of moldy spots from ice buildup over the years) so it’ll be spring now before we can get the rest done.
I wish I could move all the furries out of here. This place is just a complete tip!

Anyway I was so glad to hear it wasn’t SA, which is a very nasty disease that usually ends up in a bun being PTS before their time.

Do you know, I wonder if mold could be behind your vertigo aswell? I’m pretty sure Elrohwen said her mother has some ear issue related to mold in the workplace. It can cause all sorts of ailments in differrent people.

I wish I could move all the furries out of here.

Would it be possible to live somewhere temporarily while house issues get sorted? Like in someones vacant home while they’re away? Sometimes people advertise for house sitters.

You could try getting a small air purifier for his room. It might help if the problem is from mold or other allergens in the air.

I do have one of those ionizing tower fans in the bunny room, but a purifoer is going to cost a wee bit more than what I have at present to spend. But if anyone has a link to a good one, I’ll take a look.

No Jerz, there’s nowhere else, I’m afraid. And with winter setting in, everyone who would consider house sitters (nevermind one that would allow me to bring my pets) has already set up their places and left state by now. We’re just going to have to hunker down and try to keep the problems under control till good weather returns. We had a good dusting of the wicked white stuff last night and hubby tells me it rained and hailed overnight as well. Lovely roads await! >_<

Surprisingly, I’ve noticed in the last few days my vertigo has spontaneously abated somewhat. I’m astonished that it can go so quickly considering how bad it was. There’s still moments where I feel generally unsteady, but the horrible whirling dervish syndrome is reduced. So that’s a plus!
We had looked into starting one of those modular home distribution businesses at one time, if we could just pull the funds together I’d like to revisit that, if only for the opportunity of having one put up on my property to use as a display unit and a place to stay while we get this old dump a bit more shipshape. It was a promising career back then, I should’ve jumped at it when I had the chance.

Not sure what your price range is, but here are some I feel are decently priced (for air purifiers that is lol) –

And this is really expensive one that’s on sale for pretty cheap (considering):

In fact, I might have to get this one for myself

bwild, you beat me to it. Those are great prices! And I know that both companies are very reputable. MM, consider buying one of these (or 2) as compared to the cost of visits to the vet for issues that turn out to be allergy related, not to mention your own doc visits. I think it is a very worthwhile investment.

I have an ionizing fan tower that I used to bring to work because of people with perfumes, as well as no cleaners there for 2 years. It helped me immediately just to have it blow toward the door, but only very temporarily. I think a full air purifier will make a huge difference. I am betting on the mold for both of you. Here in FL it’s a constant problem.

Dontcha just love the Bag Balm? I use it once in a while on my feet when the heels dry due to wearing sandals all day. Put it on, cover with socks and sleep in it. Moisturizes all night, and doesn’t muck up my sheets or floor. I have one of our FL’s here to thank for the tip.

Thanks for the links, bwild. I like the one you posted, plus I’m ogling the one that is by the same manufacturer but has an automatic setting:
                                    http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-04492-True-Air-Purifier/dp/B000GHLMRC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1318913132&sr=8-2
The last time I looked stuff like this up, they were outrageously priced at almost 200-300 dollars.
I may get one for the bunny room and one for the hubby at this price. He needs something for his constantly stuffy nose.

Pam, I’ve used bag balm on an off for abut 20 years or more. Never thought of it as a bunny product, but it’s worked like a charm. Mimzy’s right ear is now completely healed on the tip. No rough stuff. It’s a miracle!

Thanks, kral! We got one of the purifiers the other day, but I gave it to the hubby to put where Hello Kitty likes to hang out with him to help his breathing problems first. The next one should show up this week and will go in the bunny room.
Mimz is doing better but still has those rough cuticle things showing up on his ears, higher along the pinna now. I’ve removed all possible allergens but his Carefresh which he can’t do without with his occasional ‘accidents’. Still not sure what’s causing the ear troubles or his incontinence. But at least his fur on his back is almost all grown in again.

He also seems to have an intolerance for heat. Just made a new post about that in this section.
