I know you are not supposed to give bunnies baths. But sometimes you have to, especially if they get sick and get poopy butt.

I always put my bunnies in their kennel while I clean the cage. Normally I put a hand towel in with them so it is not so slippery but today I forgot. When I went to put them away I noticed the bottome of the kennel was soaking wet with pee! This happened a few months ago too! So I did what I did last time. I filled  a little bit of the bathtub up with warm water ( not to warm though) and splashed water over there bums carefully so I didn’t get them more wet then they needed to be, then dried them off with a towel. The thing is, they still stunk like pee after words! Is there a safe kind of soap I could use to get the smell off next time.

Note to self: Drying bunny off with towel does not work the best. Next time use a hair dryer. LOL they were not happy with me after that.

Any safe soap and better ways to clean your bunnies bum would be helpful!

        Thanks!

I honestly wouldn’t worry about it for pee. Use a damp cloth maybe, but they’ll wash it off themselves. It’s things like poopy butt that you want to give them a bath for.

If you ever do need to give them a bath for a thing like poopy butt, lukewarm water about an inch or two high with a towel on the bottom of the bathtub works best.

Monkeybun: I tried to wipe them off with a rag first but when I picked him up he was dripping with pee and it got allover the place!

I would give a bath for pee too. No, they aren’t supposed to get soaked, but as long as they live in a climate controlled area, it’s not as dire as if you’re drenching them and then sticking them in extreme hot or cold. My usual is filling the sink with about an inch of lukewarm water and sitting the bun in it, the short soak should help the smell. I wouldn’t use soap because that could irritate the skin if not 100 percent cleaned off. Then I towel dry and thats it, I wouldn’t use a blow dryer on them personally.

OneTwoThree: I have herd allot of people on this forum using  blow driers (on cool) to dry there buns off after a bum bath. It seems less stressful then a towel being rubbed all over them. But maybe not.

I would have washed them in the sink but my sink is very small it would have been very hard.

If it works for others it’s probably fine I personally just towel dry mine, but I don’t have a dense fur bun like a rex that would probably be more of an issue. Speaking of, I might have to give the new bun a full bath, she lived in a barn and I’m pretty sure we’re all allergic because we’ve all been sneezing like maniacs since I brought her home :/ Have you done one of those before? Tips?

Yeah, Lulu has very thin hair and she wasn’t the problem. Mocha has very thick hair. Especially near his bum and I couldn’t get it completely dry. Silly buns.

I used to have to bathe Spockie when he was 7 and incontinent, and I primarily towel dried him. I wrapped him up in my lap first, then let him back in his clean house a bit damp without any breezes on him (no blowing AC, heaters or fans, or open windows for drafts.) He would then lick and clean himself a bit. He was a Mini Rex.

If you blow dry, and I did that sometimes too, you need to put it on the medium or low heat setting, and get at least 6 inches away. It’s really not that great for them, but it is quicker. No hot air and not strong blowing or close, in other words.
