I’m roaming around Bunspace, and saw people encouraging a new bun owner to take the pellets out of the cage since her bunny only showed interest in hay anyway? Have you heard of that? It seems so crazy, I’d love to know if anyone here does that and what the reasoning is!

I know that some people substantially cut down the amount of pellets that they give their adult buns sometimes to the point of no pellets, but babies definitely need their pellets!

I don’t know how old the bunny is and so if it is a baby, then I am not sure I would recommend a pelletless diet unless recommended by a vet. And the vet — maybe at that point the vet would suggest more alfalfa hay (for calories) and possibly supplements.  I don’t know, but I wouldn’t but a baby rabbit on a pelletless diet without a vet’s instructions.

But for adults, a pelletless diet is not uncommon, but if someone does decide to go pelletless, then a large variety of greens is recommended so that they can get more vitamins/nutrients that way.   My bunny Jack was on a pelletless diet due to health issues that required him to have a high hydration diet.  However, he got about 10 – 14 different types of greens.

I missed the posts on this, sorry! Yeah I’m pretty sure hers was a baby, and I agree that seems a little scary. Pelletless completely seems a little scary, but it seems to have a lot of benefits! I’m thinking about cutting back Samsons a LOT, she’s 8 months but she hardly eats her hay I think because she’s filling up on the pellets…How many more cups of veggies would I give her?

At 8 months she should be getting limited timothy pellets. 1/4 cup for 5-6 lbs of body weight. Also 2 cups of 3 or more different kinds of veggies for 6lbs of body weight. Make sure you do any changes slowly to avoid GI problems. What kind of hay do you give her?

Actually at 8 months you should start cutting back on pellets. 7 months to 1 year – 1/2 cup per 6 pound body weight.

My older rabbits do not get any pellets at all. And honestly the ones I do give free feed pellets don’t eat much of them at all. It’s not scary at all if your vet recommends this. Each rabbit is different and you just have to get the best advice from your vet that you can and see what works best for your rabbits. My vets aren’t worried about a no pellet diet for my rabbits.

Mocha, according to this it’s 1/2 cup per 6lbs? http://rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html#babies

Ah yeah, what Sarita said She gets about that, plus veggies. I see her eat hay, its just not much.
I haven’t talked to my vet about changing her diet, although maybe I should. I’d just never heard of it before
