My hubby took some of Kairi’s poops (both the runny and the normal) to the vet for him to examine. (Less stress on her). He said it was giardia and some bacteria. He gave hubby “Albon” with the directions “Give 1 ml by mouth for the first dose, then give 1/2 ml by mouth once a day for 6 days.”  Is this the correct treatment for Giardia?

Hubby forgot to mention we have 2 bunnies, so I need to call vet tomorrow and see if we need to treat other bunny concurrently (Puck is not having diarrhea, but they live together).

Kairi is eating and drinking normal…just having diarrhea.

Please, any advice or insight will be appriciated!

Giardia can definitely be transmitted to your other bunny, and to humans as well. So take precautions!

I haven’t had to deal with it personally though, so I can’t say for certain how it is treated. You could always call up another bunny vet and ask.

When one of my rabbits was diagnosed with this my vet recommended metronidazole (flagyl) but I know there are other treatments. I have to be honest, I’m not entirely sure that is what he had and my vet eventually sent out a fecal to a lab and it came back negative although he was still having mushy gooey poo’s.

It’s generally spread through water and we wondered at the time if it was from lettuce that he ate….

Are you sure it’s not coccidia? That is treated w/Albon.

Hubby said Giardia, but I will call vet tomorrow and double check. Hubby also forgot to mention our other bun, so I want to see if he should be on preventative treatment.  Thanks!

But how would our bunnies get either giardia or coccidia? They don’t go outside, nor consort with any other animal that goes outside (except for us humans). We are on city water, so that shouldn’t be an area of concern, should it?

They can get it from water on lettuce and veggies as well as drinking water. Coccidia they usually pick up from other rabbits, often when they are still too young to leave their mama.

Coccidia is usually spread through their feces. Usually you see coccidia in young rabbits or rabbits who have lived in unsanitary conditions…where did your 2 come from? It’s very common (and it doesn’t mean that you keep your rabbits in an unsanitary place so don’t think I’m implying this). Usually rabbits who have been outside, in shelters, in petstores, those rabbits generally have it.

Giardia – your the only other rabbit I’ve ever heard of having this and like I said, I question whether mine had this…so double check with the vet :~) They sound very close when you pronounce them so perhaps your husband misunderstood.

Kair came from a local pet store about 2-3 years ago. We just got Puck from a rescue foster mom about Jan of Feb of this year. Can you tell me about this disease? I have tried to look it up, but I can’t get info on mortality and zoonotic’s.

It’s very treatable. The albon should clear it up. Zoonotics – I have no idea. I can tell you I’ve treated many a rabbit and it’s been cured for my rabbits. I would call the vet tomorrow to confirm and ask questions to put your mind at ease :~)

Thanks! I love my bunnies and hate to think of them being hurt or ill. I know you all feel the same way for your buns, that’s why we’re here!  I’ll update when I talk to the vet.

Ok, I just got off the phone with the vet assistant. She said on the chart it says “Giardia? Bacteria +++++”.  So could he be treating only the bacteria?

Hmmm….it’s impossible to know what the vet is thinking. Perhaps you should try to talk directly with him.
