        EDITED:

I noticed yesterday that 3 of my 5 bunnies have what looks like a wet mouth.  One side of their mouth is wet on either the right or left side.  They all are eating and drinking fine (no sneezing, discharge or anything like that).  This was a cause for concern, so I called my vet but couldn’t get an appointment (until Monday).  Having a friend that’s a vet technician and works in specializing in bunnies with serious medical needs,  I gave her a call and she came right over.  She took a look at Peanut, examined her mouth and said that she might have an abcess.  Upon examining the remaining bunnies, she couldn’t find anything wrong with their teeth, just the wet mouth.  She put them on Baytril and Peanut will see the vet Monday morning (for the possible abcess).  Has anyone experienced this before?  She thought it might be Pasterella, but couldn’t be sure.  She asked if my bunnies had been exposed to other bunnies.  I said no.  If you looked at them, you couldn’t tell anything was wrong until you pick them up and turn them over. They are all on Oxbow Bunny Basics and timothy hay or orchard grass.  I’ll keep everyone posted on what happens tomorrow.  Thanks.

Hmm that is strange, certainly sounds like a dental problem. Hope it gets figured out soon!

I did have a bunny, Rucy, who had dental issues but that was something I knew about when I adopted her.  However, the fact that this is starting to happen to your bunnies, 3 out of 5, at the same time is rather suspicious.   It’s not uncommon for rabbits to have dental issues, but it sure would be coincidental.  (not impossible though).

Let us know what your vet says!

Sometimes dental problems can be hard to detect – the vet will need to use an otoscope to look inside the mouth.

As for pasturella, the only way to know is to do a culture and many rabbits culture positive for this but do not have symptoms.

                UPDATE 10/4/11

Peanut was examined by the vet and as it turns out she doesn’t have any dental problems. They want to perform x-rays and blood work to determine what the cause can be. She’s currently on sub-q fluids and critical care because of her weight loss. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. She’s staying at the vet’s overnight. Whatever is happening I think it’s environmental because my other two rabbits have the same symptoms. More to come. Stay tuned….

Thanks for the update. What about the other bunnies? Have they seen the vet?

                    NEWEST UPDATE:

Peanut is still at the vet! They performed x-rays and are waiting for her bloodwork to come back from the lab. From the x-rays, the vet saw a problem with her spine. He doesn’t know if it’s from an old injury or if its hereditary. She will come home tomorrow with metacam for pain and maybe tramadol (not sure if I’m spelling that right). My poor Peanut! She did gain 3 oz at the vet’s office since she LOVES her critical care. I will ask the vet if she needs to be separated from her boys. They definitely miss her and I can see that they have been partying in their x-pen since she’s been gone! Just like boys! I will know a lot more when her lab work comes back tomorrow! Stay tuned….again!

Oh, I forgot, the other two bunnies are doing well on the Baytril. The wetness is gone and they are doing much better. It’s my poor Peanut that’s really sick.

                          ANOTHER UPDATE!

Peanut is finally home! Her calcium level is extremely high (the vet thinks its due to her spinal problem) and her white blood cell count is low. At this point, she is on Baytril and Buprenex for 2 weeks. As far as her spine is concerned, there is not much they can do about that. It’s a good thing I’ve got a good relationship with my vet. He’s going to bill me in installments. She’s been at the vet since Tuesday! They say her spine will gradually deteriorate and I may have to prepare her for the rainbow bridge if the pain is too much for her. I plan on spoiling her more (if that’s possible) and giving her the best quality of life I can. The vet also has all the remaining bunnies on Baytril as well. Dosing 5 bunnies twice a day is a challenge with my work schedule but I’ll do whatever I have to.

It’s a “wait and see” situation. Thanks for the healing vibes and good wishes.

I had to separate Peanut from the boys over the weekend! Hershey was harrassing her! I’d check on Peanut and find her hiding or wedged between the potty box and the x-pen! Then I caught him chasing her! I placed Peanut in her old cage (Marchoroio) and she seems to be much happier! She eating and taking her meds well. She even seemed a little feisty this morning when I gave her meds (almost like her old self) which is a good thing. She has to go back to the vet for more blood work in two weeks.

Thanks for the update. Since she wants to have a comfortable quality of life now, it sounds like the changes you’ve just made are making her happy. I’m sure the boys can love her from afar.

I spoke to my vet tech friend and she said that there may be a new strain of Pastuerella going around. It seems that some vets in the East Bay area have come in contact with this new strain. It mimics Pasturella in that there aren’t the usual symptoms. It could be that the strain has mutated (like most strains) and could be resistant to Baytril. Just wanted to let everyone know.

Peanut seems to be doing a little better. She’s still eating and pooping like normal; just slowed down a bit due to her spinal problems. Everyone else is doing a lot better!

Thanks for the update on this possible new strain.  I’m in the East Bay area and this is interesting to find out as I haven’t had to see a vet since Jack passed away and I have been busy these last two months, so I may be out of the loop on new info

                                  Continued healing vibes!
