I know that’s not exactly the right word, but hey, it gets the point across.

We took Mitzi and Mortimer in on Friday morning for their respective spay and neuter surgeries. Mortimer finally started humping (he and Mr. Stuffed Deer have a very special relationship), and we were supposed to check back around now anyway to see if they were old enough, so the vet decided we were probably good to go. They did well and I got the call that they were in recovery around lunch time and I could come get them after work.

Mortimer came home, hopped out of the carrier, sniffed around, and started eating. Today he is MORE ACTIVE than he was before the surgery. He’s always been our timid bunny boy, so I sort of expected him to go flop in the back of the condo and want nothing to do with anything. Nope, he’s been industriously shredding cardboard and taking full advantage of the vet’s order for unlimited food of his choice, in this case banana. He’s eating and pooping just like nothing ever happened. He does NOT like to be fed his pain meds. I don’t think he minds the medicine, but he HATES the syringe. Do you think I could put his dose on his treats to get him to take it without drama?

Poor Mitzi, on the other hand, looks awful. She’s been going back and forth between laying in the litter box and laying on her bed. Clearly she doesn’t feel well at all. She has been eating though, I got her to take some banana and several big basil leaves as well as some butter lettuce. She’s nibbled hay and gotten a drink as well. Not very many poops though, should I be worried about that if she’s still taking in food?

I feel a little guilty about her discomfort, but I told her she’d thank me later when she is neither convinced she’s pregnant when she isn’t, nor barefoot and pregnant at the bunny equivalent of 14. No shotgun bonding in this house, please.

Spays tend to be a little harder on the females, and it takes them a few days to recover. I would remove all things that your rabbits are able to jump onto for the time being.

It can take a month for the hormones to die down for Mister Hyper one

Wooly was a bit psychotic after he was neutered. I don’t think that is unusual.

Hehe just keep things clean and make sure they don’t jump around too much and hurt themselves. If he’ll take his meds on a treat by all means go for it. And yeah Powder was horrid after his neuter, it took a month for him to get back to being my good bunny. o.O

What I did with Buddie was cut a chunk of banana, cut off the top making a “lid” and “drill” a hole or mini-tunnel into the bottom half. Then I squirted the full dose of medicine with the syringe into the hole, replaced the lid and gave it to him. He was so nuts about banana, that he wolfed down the whole thing immediately! You can experiment to get the proper size ‘hole’ so the medicine doesn’t leak out.

You can also mash up a small chunk of banana with the dose of medicine and give him a dish of the mashed banana on it and let him lap it all up. whatever works.

                      This made me LOL too!

She will bounce back within the week.  Spays are so much more invasive than a neuter which is just a simple outside incision.  Keep us posted on how they do.

Mitzi has bounced back nicely, and is now obsessively chewing the NIC cubes trying to get back to the whole condo. Apparently she thinks she should be allowed to jump to the second and third floors. Sorry, bunny girl, but no. She won’t hurt herself chewing the bars, will she?

Mortimer is systematically destroying every piece of cardboard he can get his teeth on. Clearly he is not feeling much discomfort. He really likes his meds now that they’re on a nice basil leaf.
