As far as I know, VPI is the only pet insurance that covers rabbits unfortunately.

An alternative to insurance is Care Credit. Other members have mentioned it has really helped them with vet bills. http://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/
Or just setting up a savings account specifically for the pet fees is another option.

Except the same answer, ie. VPI. I like it, but thankfully haven’t needed it yet.

It does not cover neuters and you HAVE to pay up front. it’s not like people insurance where it gets run through and then you pay. Also the most you can get is 90% back… You need to save money as well as having the pet insurance.

ETA: Here you can download the benefit schedule for VPI to see exactly what the cover and don’t cover: http://www.petinsurance.com/Plans-A…-Pets.aspx You will want to call them anyways though to make sure your rabbit doesn’t have any exceptions.

Starmoniiglisten, do you have any shelters or rescues in your area? I took my bun to a no-kill shelter that is run by a vet who also sees patients and provides low cost spay/neuter for animals. She does a lot of rabbits and Heff’s surgery site was perfect the entire time it was healing. If you do find one, make sure they have a lot of experience with rabbits. If they tell you that your rabbit can’t have food the night before the surgery, find someone else. I hung up on two different offices when they told me that.

I use VPI and I think it’s great as it has reinbursed me thousands of dollars over the years — much more than what my monthly premiums have added up to. It does not pay upfront.  You have to put in a claim to get reinbursed. It pays around 70% on average.   It does not cover Parasitic illnesses – worms, fleas, ticks, nor e.cuniculi (as that is considered a parasitic disease)   It does not cover pre-existing conditions, however, I was able to get a pre-existing condition dismissed after a year of non-reoccurance.

In my case, I found it helpful for emergencies AND regular vet appointments dealing with gi stasis, teeth issues, UTI, absesses, bladder problems, bladder stone surgery and cancer.

Some members have found it more beneficial to just create a savings account instead of paying premiums.  As long as you know you won’t touch the savings account for anything else and you can save enough for expensive appointments and emergencies, then that could work too.

Franz has VPI and I was waiting my 60 days to get it for Jasmine but I guess I forgot! Make sure you have proof of owning the rabbit for more than 60 days before you sign up. Right now it’s $12/ month. Unfortunately I got it after Franz already saw the doctor for GI stasis so I have to wait 6 months to a year before getting that covered. It’s definitely the only rabbit insurance as I checked everywhere.
