Well, it started last night when Ringo refused to eat his dinner salad. We did the normal routine of rubbing his belly, baby gas med, etc… and he ended up going all night with no pooping/eating. We took him to the emergency vet this morning and he was diagnosed with his first bout of GI Stasis. The vet was great and took her time showing us how to give him his critical care, and meds. She also gave him a pain shot and some fluids thorugh an IV along with X-Rays to confirm he didnt have an actual blockage.

He is home now just laying there like he had been all night. I am so scared! I just lost my father suddenly and unexpectedly this February. I can’t lose my bunny too!

Please send him (and me) some good vibes. We could sure use them.

Vibes to Ringo. Did the vet have any ideas what caused the stasis?

I have no idea what could have caused it, diet wise. The vet asked me if the maintenance crew at my apartment had been doing work or anything. And actually they were banging all day yesterday working on the apartment next to ours. So, I am not sure if maybe that spooked him or what. We have gone through small bouts of gas, but nothing as scary as this!

Does anyone know how often bunnies die from this? I am glad we caught it and have a plan with our vet now, but I am just soooooo worried.

Stasis is a conditon not an actual illness. So trying to find the cause is key. It is not always caused by diet. It can be caused by many things including stress, underlying illness, dental problems to name a few.

If you are treating it and it sounds like your vet is being very aggressive, which is good, then hopefully he will begin eating on his own soon.

In the meantime, try to figure out what may have caused the onset.

Well the vet DID say that she wanted to see him w/i 6 mos to have his “back molars” grinded down some. She said they were not that bad and she didnt think that was causing his gi stasis necessarily though. Maybe it IS his teeth? We just spent $300 this morning at the vet. My fiance and I are both law students (= broke), so stressful! Thanks for the help guys.

Ooh that is stressful *hugs* I know many bunnies that had several bouts of GI Stasis in their lives and came out fine. You got him to the vet fast so that’s great. It doesn’t make it any easier on you though. Hope he gets better quickly.

My bunny, Buster has been at the hospital 3x because of it. We are still not sure what causes it. Could be that she’s an overgroomer, got scared, affected by certain gaseous vegetables. I dont want to jinx it, but she’s been vet visit free for almost 6 months (when she was going in every 3 mnths) after a regimin of pumpkin and aloe juice (1 tbsp of pumpkin and 1.5cc of aloe juice a day) that my vet recommended to a few of her buns.
Love to your bun, Ringo will be better soon!!!!!!!!!

                        (((vibes!!)))
I keep Pedialyte on hand at all times as well as always having plenty of greens. I’ve found that combination, when used very early, works like a charm!

                          ((((Get Well Ringo)))))

I’ve dealt with very serious GI situations like this with my 2 boys. Stormy quite a few times and he always bounced back. The cause is always a mystery. Sometimes it’s a hard few days though. You and your vet did all the right things.

It’s my experience that IV fluids help a lot so if he’s still not eating or pooping you may want to ask your vet to give him more. My vet taught us how to do it ourselves one time that Bindi was really bad and gave us the stuff so we could administer some every 12 hours. It saves you money and the stressful car trip too. I couldn’t do the needle in my bunny but my bf did that part and it worked really well for us.

                          Please keep us updated.
