So my furry bff had surgery today. He did well. He is nibbling on everything and I can see the tiredness in his eyes but the boy does not want to relax. He wants to go off exploring like usual. Ugh! His incision started bleeding a bit, applied some pressure (not too much) and it was fine. He wasn’t saturated with blood but bled a bit on my shirt. I have him in a plastic storage bin, half covered, watching him. He is on a blanket and starting to sleep as I type this. He has a cone which I’ll put on him when it’s mama’s bed time.

I was wondering though, this place didn’t dermabond (glue) or stitch the incision, saying that it was only 1/4 of an inch big and that when something foreign is down there, they tend to lick more, causing themselves problems. Is this common practice?

Hm. I am not sure if that is normal, where did you get him done? A vet or a low-cost clinic? My vet uses internal sutures that dissolve on their own, since he says rabbits tend to not pick at it if the sutures are done that way.

It was a clinic but it was one that was reccommeded by our local rabbit rescue and they do specialize in rabbits/exotics. I did do my homework before taking him, even delaying ot a second time to double check.

hmm normally, from my experience, they would seal it. Keep an eye on it, see what happens. Did you get pain meds for him?

Yes I did. He is acting completely normal. Eating, drinking, pooping, peeing, even lying down normally.

Clinics often have different procedures than regular vets, usually meant to save on costs since they are so much cheaper. I have never heard of leaving an incision open, but it may be more common in the clinics and less common in vets offices. I would just keep a closer eye on it, since I would be more worried about infection / debris getting into an open wound. And make sure you clean his litter box frequently until it heals up.

I just checked it out and it looks great! Even the bruising is starting to fade. He cleaned around it but hasn’t licked the incision (watching him like crazy), probably cuz it’s too sore. He is still continuing to eat, no issues with taking pain meds. He is, however, VERY mad at me. Any time I go near the cage, I get bunny butt. He won’t even look at or come near me when I call his name (he 95% of the time does). Even bribed him with banana.

He is doing amazing this morning!!! Let him out of his condo for about 20 mins to “stretch” but out him back in as he was acting too “normal” and I didn’t want him to hurt himself. The incision looks great. Can’t believe how little bruising. My dog had a lot more. He is still pretty mad at me though Oh btw, when would I be able to let him be able to use his upper level of his condo again? After the weekend (it’ll have been 5 days post op)?

Glad he’s doing better! Yes, this weekend should be fine. I don’t think he’s mad at you, he’s probably just confused and soon to be hormonal.

it almost sounds like they did what is commonly called an open neuter, I called around in my area before I had Cinnabun’s done and that was one of my questions I asked them, do they do closed or open neuters. surprisingly almost all of them did opens :/ An open isn’t bad its just a different type they do.
