So for probably over  month now Ive been suffering from all sorts of respiratory problems…about 3 weeks ago I went to the Dr. and she gave me azithromyocin and some allergy medicine, well it didnt help at all and I got worse….So finally yesterday after having developed a fairly severe cough, pain in my right rib and  worsening wheezing I went back to the doctor…This time I saw a different one and he prescribed me levaquin and some crappy cough suppressent that hasnt helped at all also to go for a chest x-ray.  well my dilemma is the pain has worsened and the coughing isnt helping.. Im not seeking medical advice more so I know I should go to the ER, problem is me being the stubborn paramedic I am just does not want to .  I definitely need persuasion out of my stupidity,  Ive considered going but waiting until tonight when I know the staff thats working…thing is Im miserable…  I guess Im more so embarrassed Ive let it go this far

I’m not sure that is something you want to go to the ER for…I would try to go back to your regular doctor as soon as possible though. If you’ve been seen twice for it already, I imagine they can get you in as soon as possible.

          Hope you feel better soon.

I don’t think I’d go to the ER at all. Have you found an ENT? I think this problem is beyond the experience of a general practitioner. As someone who has lived with sinus problems for a long time, having a doctor who is experienced with the newer drugs and treatments makes a big difference. Levaquin is typically great for sinus issues, though I’m wondering if they would prescribe you a steroid as well at this point.

I bet your regular doctor can refer you to a specialist, I do think that is a good idea.

Just a thought, my hubby had what he thought was respiratory issues, he had same symptoms. But his turned out to be a pulled muscle in his chest wall. A grip ton of Alleve later, it took months, but all the junk they gave for his lungs and breathing was for nothing. Happened to be a workman’s comp doctor, not our regular doc who made the diagnosis. No matter what it is, sounds like it is no fun….

Oh no, I’m sorry that you haven’t been feeling your best . I agree with the others that you don’t necessarily have to go to the ER for this, but you do definitely need to go back to the doctor’s office. Have you let your doctor know that the medicine didn’t help? Only through your feedback can they learn and figure out how to help you further…if you don’t go back, they’ll assume they diagnosed correctly and everything is fine.

Also, if you need persuasion – keep in mind that as workers in the healthcare field, we have the obligation to keep ourselves in decent health not only so that we can perform our best, but also so that we don’t pass on illnesses to our patients .

I would have to say – get a referral to a specialist. My doctor couldn’t deal with a condition of mine, and referred me to a person that is more knowledgeable in my problem. GP touches the surface of things, and specialists can help a great deal.

Unless you can’t breathe I wouldn’t go back to the ER either. Do you normally have allergies? Also, I’ve learned recently that you can have asthma without showing typical signs and symptoms, which can be induced by allergies. It can go undetected and written off as allergies. I’m just thinking that because you stated you are having some wheezing. The pain I’m sure is because your coughing but still have it checked out. Maybe a pulmonologist? Poor thing! Feel betters asap!

the problem is I cant breathe, its very similar to an asthma attack except with lots of rhonchi and extreme pain, I took a vicodin earlier with no relief of the pain just knocked me out a bit so I could get a little sleep  my doctor also gave me an inhaler to use 2 puffs every 6 hours and Ive exceeded that by far.  now its gotten where I can only take shallow quick breaths may try to wait it out, I need to find a new doctor there are no good ones in my area

Well, usually the ER is only going to get you stabilized for your immediate problem and you need to find out what the problem is so that you don’t keep having the attacks. I hope you can find a doctor who can help you…it’s definitely a challenge. Ask friends and coworkers for recommendations if they have any.

My husband is also a paramedic- and has often consulted with docs he knows about medical issues. If you know the docs you can always ask them what they recommend as your next step- be admitted and evaluated or a follow up with a certain kind of specialist.

so an update, I actually couldnt breathe which is why I ended up going to the er.  As soon as I got there they put in in the back and started me on a duoneb because my lungs were so tight.  After the chest x-ray they found I had pleurisy in my right lung and gave me steroids and pain killers. The pain is still there but my breathing has improved dramtically the doctor said I had acute bronchitis which cause the pleurisy to occur, but he said for bronchitis it was amazingly advanced and was shocked I waitied so long to come in .  The percocet seems to be taking the edge off but its still there, the cough seems to have gotten a lot better though.  while Im at work saturday the doctor wants me to check back in, even though they recommended me taking time off (stubborness wins again).

On a side note I hate when people go to the er for stupid reasons but after dweeling on it all day I coudnt justfy not going especially with my breathing being so poor, I just wish I had a doctor that could have helped me weeks ago when I sought it as opposed to it getting this bad, when I walked into the er they freaked out thinking I was having an asthma attack lol Im just glad I knew the nurse who took care of me, he is a good friend and truly did an amazing job of getting me in and out quickly.

You need to take time off if the doctor says so Or else, I will steal your bunnies

You went to a GP twice with no avail, sometimes an ER trip is what it takes.

I can’t stand when people go to the ER for something stupid though. At least try to find an after hours walk in clinic first. That is what I did once, and it turns out all it was, was gastroenteritits. So glad I did not pay more and take up ER space for it. But I was in so much pain I did not want to wait for my doc in the morning.

Joyfull Music – When my mother passed away, I was under a lot of stress – physically and emotionally.

I was living by myself at the time, and I began to feel pain. I began to throw up and my stomach was bloated. I was in a lot of pain and I called my dad to take me to the ER. I had gastroenteritis. It may not be serious, but it needs to be treated I was happy to feel a lot better but I couldn’t eat much without feeling bloated and gross. UGH. That wasn’t fun!

It was from stress- losing my mom.
